AE92 wobble, wheel bearing?

Postby varix » Wed May 30, 2007 2:59 pm

Just recently I have noticed a sort of wobbling sound coming from one of my front wheels, i cant quite figure which one, it gets worse the faster I am going and only seems to happen on long sweeping corners (probably just more noticable on these corners). And yes my wheel nuts are tight.

I have just got 4 brand new tyres and a wheel alignment, so that rules that out. I have jacked the car up and tightened all the strut bolts etc. Everything that I thought could be an issue.

Is it likely to be a wheel bearing? Or perhaps a buckled wheel (even though the balance for the tyres should have fixed that)?

Any suggestions would be great.

check for play in the wheel bearing.

jack one side up so wheel clears ground
hands at 6 & 12 o'clock
see if you can move hands towards you and away from you (it may only be a small amount, but you will feel it if you can)
if so...yep its wheel bearing.

repeat for other side.

quite common on Toyota's for the left side wheel bearing to need replacing before the right hand side will

Replacing a bearing isn't the hardest job in the world is it?

If you can find a whole hub in good nick just get that, Pick a part or similar.
Think you need access to a press if you want to do bearings yourself, and 32(?)mm deep socket to undo + tighten the hub nut.

also bear in mind that if your wheel is buckled and, whoever balanced it thinking along the "she'll be right" lines then no. A buckled wheel is a buckled wheel, may pay to check that by spinning wheels and you'll see it alright. Or perhaps even if the wheel nuts are tight is the wheel sitting flush with the hub? Wheel bearing play will have same effect and it'll have quite alot of play if so. Had one on a customers ae111 levin that had loads of bearing play. Yes you'll need a hydraulic press to fit new wheel bearng into the hub and it may be easier and cheaper to buy second hand if a new bearing doesn't ft into your budget. IF you noticed the wheel wobble more so now than before you got the tyres, and everything is alll good i'd go back and question the place that balanced your tyres. Either their balancer is slightly out of spec, the wheel is buckled even slightly and you've noticed it. Or the manufacturing of the tyre isn't the best and the tyre is effectively out of round. appens a bit and should be able to get it replaced free

would a worn wheel bearing cause a vehicle to pull left?
