Slotted Rotor direction???

I got a set of cross drilled slotted rotors that I had for ages just been to lazy to put them on......

If the top of the rotor is going this way ----> should the slots at the top of the rotor be facing / or \ ????

Check a few pics out on trademe but seems to be a mixed bag....

\ That way, so it throws the dust out, not try and push it in. All though at the end of the day, I doubt it makes any difference.

are the internal vanes directional?
any intructions say which way they go?

in my head i have "/" but i dont know why.....
and now that iv thought about it iv seen stock ones go either way :?

Been doing a bit of reading and from what I understand you need to check the veins on the inside go / --->
Apparently some manufacturers have the outside slots going in one direction where as others go in the other direction.

I thought I read on the DBA site that they go this way /

If it means anything the TRD altezza has them going this way /

It doesn't matter which way the slots face so long as they are straight vane rotors, if they are curved vane rotors then yes it does matter, & in that case you want the rotor so that when it spins in the forwards direction(forwardsmotion of car) the air is sucked in from the centre & pumped out throught the outside of the rotor(Generally, though for some reason you may sometimes run them backwards but not often)

im interested in this too, but how can everyone answer the direction question?

surely it depends wether we are talking about the drivers or passengers side???

I'd imagine that it would be driverside, as if you were looking at the front of the rotor and the top was going this way ---->

I think what hes getting at, is that unless you get them in sets, they will face different directions depending on which side of the car they are installed.

do they come in lefty and rightys? :lol:

Regardless of if it's a straight or curved vane rotor, yes you should have one of each side, one left & one right as when they are machined you need to machine a left & a right handed rotor. But as above if they are straight vaned(Can see down through the vanes from the outside to the inside & there is definately no major curves) then it doesn't matter which way you run them. I've tried them both ways on my road car & there is no noticeable difference, & I've also seen brake dyno evidence to suggest the same for a straight vane rotor. Curved vane rotors are another kettle of fish & have to be run one direction only pretty much & as such they should be marked or boxed as left or right, else if you look at the direction of curvature on the vanes(not the slots) you can tell which way they go.

Harrop & a few other respectable manufacturers make rotors that have slots that go both forwards & backwards. From my understanding & testing(I've got plenty of rotors here with different slots(depths,lengths,shapes)) it doesn't really make a lot of difference what slots you've got provided that you don't cut down on the friction area too much by machining slots all over the rotor. The only real other trick is in keeping the balance when you slot them depending on how you do them.

Had a talk to the chap in america where I had to get them from and he said it doesn't matter which way they go. It's a straight vein rotor so he said it's up to you. He has a race car and said that over there different people have different opinions, but he reckons it make sweet stuff all difference. He said for looks most people will go ---> \ if your looking at the drivers side top of the rotor.

Does anyone know if there's a special way to wear them in???

To be honest there is not really any trick in bedding in a set of rotors. I'd normally use a good set of used pads, but new pads are fine & I just give them some gentle stops first to take the high spots off & then use them from there. I'd be more worried about ensuring the runout is to a minimum than bedding them in in any set procedure.

I got EBC (i think thats the name of them) pad in there at the moment, Someone said not to do heaps of heavy braking in the first couple hundred k's or they might bend or warp... really don't think thats going to happen though...

Ok, so are you guys talking about the internal vanes inside the rotor that you cannot see without taking the wheels off,

Or the slots that are machined into the pad surface of the disk like these?

one makes a huge difference, one does not.

But they are what I put on my car.
The internal vanes are straight, but I put they are still left and right,
and I fitted them / so that they pull the gasses created between the pad and disk to the outside.

It won't make much of a difference even on rotors that are specified to be left and right, although of course if they're specified left and right, use them that way.

As an aside, we've found that in the DBA range, the slotted ones last longer (under extreme abuse, i.e. Police dog vans) than the drilled and slotted ones. YMMV.

For bedding them I’ve been told by race brakes to use olds pad on new rotors and do a couple of hundred K's on the rotors before putting in your new pads and bedding them in. When I bed in my Mintex 1166 per instructions (on to brembo slotted rotors) they get very very hot and smoke like crazy not what I would want to be doing if I had brand new rotors that haven’t been through any heat cycles on the car.

Yes, do not use new pads to bed in new disc's.
You need to flatten off some old pads and use them to heat cycle the disk a few times.
