Building a turbo 20v

Postby Defective » Tue Jun 12, 2007 11:05 am

Yes, ive done a search, but i think i might be search retarded... it came up with thousands of topics :?

And itl give us something to talk about 8)

Right, i've pretty much convinced my self to stop spending money on cosmetic bits and pieces for my car and start compiling the bits to build a mild turbo motor.

i know the blacktop rods are no good for forced induction, so what i was thinking was this;

Silvertop block
blacktop head (they flow better dont they? and im hoping the BT compression is all in the pistons)
run a decompression plate
what size turbo would be ideal? i would be thinking somewhere round the 150-160kw at the wheels.
obviously there is a million over bits and pieces as well, but once ive got these three main bits sorted i can start shopping....

and obviously a link or similar to run the whole thing...

Just looking at different ideas at the mo, and will be in no rush to get it done.

yes black top head appears to be better for turbo
use silvertop rods (no reason you cant use the black top block)
use 4agze pistons (yes BT compression is in pistons)
dont use a decompression plate.. wont need to with 4agze pistons.

was just gonna use silver top block as i was gonna build it up in my garage, then swap it all over, so if i was buying a seperate block, might as well get a silver top....

so ze pistons the go, hmm.... sweet...

Correct me if i am wrong But the block itself is the same (7 rib) it is only the internals (lighter rods, flywheel) that are different, between silver & black top.

different part numbers, i think its just minor differences i cant remember and dont have any info to hand
but as for swapping bits over theres no worries they all fit. ie the heads, sumps, oilpumps etc all interchange.

so yeah effectivley they are the same, but the arnt :D

anyone come across any differences?

I think most people who do this start with TD04 or TD05? I'm using a T25 on the one I'm getting parts for at the moment.

$400ish last time I checked i think.

And funnily enough the search came up with thousands of topics, because its been asked that many times!!!!!

For 150kws, go TD05 or a simular sized turbo in the vf series. TD04 will stretch that far, but its the limit pretty much. (use those turbos for cost, cheapness)

And what revhead said.

And 20v block and crank, st rods, gze pistons, blacktop head if you have one, but st head will do 150kws easy.

And you will need a new intake plemun.

if you're planning to build a complete engine, why not just get the GZE as in its whole? thn drop in the BT head?

as for turbo, i would go with td04 size or T25 for street application, td05 single fin is does do some drag

you can rtebuild what you have into a NEW motor
