later model c52 into ae82

Postby ChaosAD » Thu Jun 14, 2007 12:26 am

I need to drop a latermodel c52 gearbox with the two starter bulge's into my ae82.

I did a search and see that I need to use my old half shafts. But the old ones bolt onto flanges comming out of the gearbox, and with the newer gearboxes the shafts slot into it.

Have tried and the flange bits dont want to come off the old gearbox.

So what does everyone else use? ae92 shafts?

have a look and see if putting the ae82 outer ends into the ae1x1 inner is possible, i have a feeling that i've heard of that being done.

we have installed AE100 C52 into AE82, we have also installed AE92 C52 into AE110 no issues on either of them

those shafts are a real pain to get out, the workshop states to use a slide hamme to remove the inner :?
I used a tyre lever to get one of my inner axles shafts out of 1 of the gearboxes i stripped down. We've fitted a c52 out of an ae92 into an ae82 at work before no problems with shafts. this is only for the c52 boxes. c56 out of ae101 20v has different splines so can't use ae92 inners

thats all i did... shouldnt take much to pop out if you have enough leverage.

I'm still running the original shafts with the stubs in my c56 box in my ae82

You'll have to unbolt the converter from the transmision. 4 bolts you can access through the bellhousing of the transmission, from the engine side usually, sometimes they need a bit of encouragment to seperated them from the driveplate. Then just unbolt the driveplate from the engine.

And to confirm i just tried the c52 inner cv for the diff in my C52 and c56 box at work and same splines

Transmission is off, torque convertor is still on engine. Are there bolts behind the flexplate?

Sweet, just gotta gt the old ones out.

C56 gearbox is the 6speed one I think.

From what i've physically investiagted the ae1** C56 and later model ae92 c52 box share the same 2 mounts for the starter motor , initially the 2 lumps on the bellhousing. either way both bellhousings are same. C56 have closer ratios and use electronic speedo drive compared to the ae92c52 mechanical cable type. Rear mounting bolt holes are same swell as the bolt pattern for the bellhousings between late model ae92 c52 and c56. Earlier ae82 c52's have different sized bolt holes down the bottom for the tin plate that bolts to the bellhousing to cover up the flywheel.

Nup, thats the C160 which has ratios of (from 1st through 6th)

[ 3.214 ] [ 2.050 ] [ 1.481 ] [ 1.166 ] [ 0.916 ] [ 0.725 ]

C56 is still a 5 speed with ratios of

[ 3.166 ] [ 1.904 ] [ 1.392 ] [ 1.031 ] [ 0.815 ]

as compared with a C52

[ 3.166 ] [ 1.904 ] [ 1.310 ] [ 0.969 ] [ 0.815 ]

I've found all mounting points to be the same (except starter motor) also, but depending on the chassis you're using, make sure you use the mounts that belong to that chassis (on both gearbox and crossmember)

Oh, so can I bolt a silvertop to a c52 with two humps? or wont the gearbox line up properly with the hole in the backing plate for the starter?

Yes. Definately. The box is an AW11 C52 with the housing off an AE101 C52 bolted to the front. Backing plate behind the flywheel is off a 7AFE, although any AE101 one with the hole in the intake side should work fine (was just using what was available). The starter motor is a 20v one.
