What oil to use in my bluetop 4age?

Postby sigma » Thu Jun 14, 2007 7:17 pm

Right so ive had a good search for info and have learnt quite a bit about oil. Problem is I still dont know what to use! Engine in question is a bluetop and im getting big blue clouds of smoke on acceleration, usually following harsh deceleration. Im lead to believe this is caused by oil collecting in the head and going through the breather into the plenum etc

So my question is, as the engine was rebuilt about 10,000kms ago, would it be advisable to run 0w30 weight oil? Im thinking being thiner, it will drain back from the head faster, and as the engines relativly 'fresh' the lower viscosity wont be a problem as far is getting past the rings and seals is concerned. Also being n/a, im thinking full synthetic. Namely Castrol Edge: Sport 0w30 (on sale at Repco).

Thoughts?

waaay to thin

sounds like you have an issue with the engine itself rather than the oil you are using.
id be using castrol protec on that.

but that smoke sounds like valve stem seals.

if you coast then accelerate does it smoke? does it smoke when you take off after idling for a bit?

Coasting in 2nd, 3500rpm then floor it = no smoke
Coasting in 2nd, 4500rpm then floor it = no smoke
Coasting in 3rd, 3000rpm then floor it = no smoke

Idle for 2 mins then floor it, revving out to end of 2nd = no smoke

But come to the hills; rev out to 5k, brake for corner, floor it = smoke
Repeat = more smoke!

Might put a catch can in and see if that helps.

Was the head rebuilt too? If it wasn't then I'd say its the valve stem seals since your smoke is after engine breaking.

Actually looking at the recepits the head doesnt look like it was rebuilt. Makes more sence now. Better put that on my to do list.

I usually do 5-6000k between oil changes on my 20v, hardly drops any from what i can tell.

But up to 10,000k this time (maily due to being too busy & then lazy) on magnatec. Seems to be good oil for mine anyway.

But im stating to get a slight oil leek somewhere around the dizzy & a tiny bit near the cambelt cover.

Any ideas? Doesnt blow any smoke thou.

Sorry for the thread hijack dude.

But re yourr prob, isnt blue smoke sometimes caused by runnin rich?

silvertop leak above sounds like dixxy oring and cam/crank seals

blue smoke is oil smoke ... running rich is black/brown
