4AGE takes ages to warm up

Postby fuzzilogyc » Sun Jun 17, 2007 10:42 pm

Hey guys,

My smallport 4AGE seems to take ages to warm up (middle of the temperature gauge). We're talking like ~10mins from dead cold to middle to the temp gauge. Is this normal? Faulty temperature sensor? ideas/opinions?
Cheers

cool cool. cheers...

another question:
the car is hard to start when dead cold. takes like 7 or 8 turns.
however, after running for a while, more than 15mins or something, it starts fine (like 2 or 3 turns). the battery is pretty new so shouldn't be that. plugs also less than 10,000k.

Sounds both related. Check the temp sensor for the guage and the ecu. cold start injector is turned on from the temp sensor.

how would i go about checking if these are faulty. also, if i'm correct, these water temperature sensors are found at the back of the head?

lol, there are four sensors in 4age smallport coolants system i can think of, gauge, by dip stick/cam cover, back of the head cold start sensor and efi sensor, thermostat housing, is the fan sensor, unplug it fan will come on with key on.

next time u start it from cold, put the throttle at 3/4 should kick in after 3-5 cranks, sounds like cold start circuit isn't working. mine does this as i unplug the coldstart so i could get oil moving around a bit as i don't drive it that much.

if it still playing up i would get to autosparky or very clue on mechanic to look at it from cold start.

could have number of problems.

to add to this whole temperature thing:
if the car is at normal operating temperature, then i drive it without stopping in traffic for 5mins or so, the temp gauge will drop down to cold (and idle will kick up correspondingly)....
sounds like symptons of the same problem(s)?

thermostat not working correctly if at all, and hard starting from cold can be number on problems, from battery, cold start, efi temp sensor playing up, etc

fan works fine, kicks in when the engine temp gets to normal operating temps.... well at least, seems fine to me :)

been reading around a bit about the problem possibly being the cold start injector... opinions?

Get a genuine thermostat aswell,

I went though two aftermarket (tridon) thermostats and the first was making my car run cold after a month, the second was making my car run cold right away. The places I bought them from didn't want to know about my problem.

It's not like I'm gonna test every thermostat I get before I chuck it in, I just expect them to work (is that asking too much?)

Bought a genuine one and it all works mint now.
