windscreen removal and install

Postby Mike- » Mon Jun 18, 2007 9:04 pm

hey all ive got a shattered rear windscreen and im thinking about doing it myself to save some $$ ive already got a replacement lined up and novus want $135 to put it in.

anyone else attempted this?

im trying to remove the old glass at the moment, all the trim is off, the bottom is sealant so a knife or guitar wire will do that but the top and sides are a weather strip type thing so i dont want to attack that with a knife.

any input appreciated

just kick the windo out man its $&#$% anyway, then depending on wither its a weather strip type you place string inside the seal all the way around then when you put the window in get some one to push on it from the other side as you pull the string out make sure the lip on the seal comes out with it, other wise just use some silicon if it doesnt have a proper seal

the bulk of the window is gone, just the bits around the edges that are sticking to the seals are a bit of a c**t

They are pretty much all the same, pull the weatherstrip out if you can, or get a craft knife and cut it from inside of the car. Its a horrible job to be honest.

Is it bonded in by urathane(sp) sealant?,if so cut away about half of the existing bead with a very sharp knife or chisel ,apply primer to window, then apply new urethane glue to the old remaining bead , then fit new window. Can be a messy job if you get it wrong.ie use to much urethane glue and oozes out everywhere. You will most likely find the side weatherstrips are held on by the urethane glue and are sort of clipped /slide into the screen first then everything is fitted onto the car as a complete unit

Get a piece of razor wire (actually an entire roll) wrap it around a screw driver, feed the wire through and get a mate on the other side to wrap his end around another screw driver, and then saw. Easiest way to do it. But take it slow, if u scallop the window it'll make it weaker and it could even just break outright, be prepared for the wire to break, it will several times as it heats up. Then just get some window glue (black sticky nasty stuff) and put it on the new seal on the car you're putting it in, and you're away.

But to be honest, after doing this myself, i'd pay the pros :)

EDIT: oh shit, just read it propperly ignore the take it carefully part, thought u were taking the new window out of a donor car!

Get the foam beading when you do it too, makes the job a bit less messy inside the car. Agree with the would get a pro to do it too.
