4agze: rebuild or replace?

My motor went bang the other week, I have the money to get it rebuilt or buy a replacement, and this one on trademe caught my eye:

I have a hi-comp 4agze, going to be turbocharged, I think this motor is the same spec.
How much is the trademe motor worth?
How much would it approximately cost for a full rebuild?
I would be doing everything myself except machining and bottom end assembly.

My bottom end assemb cost around $2400 for what help its worth to you.. i took it apart my self and put it together but didnt rebuilt that nor the head as i wanted the warrenty.

My engine build cost about.... $8600 parts and labour all round, ex turbo, ecu tho.

Just head bottom end, pistons rods, labour and head custom cams etc.

that engines just a rebuild 4age with thicker headgaskit, not a ze. im havn to rebuild atm, ze pistons about 700 or acl pistons 1000, 150ish for rebore and hone, im looking at gettin bronze valve guide stems on exhaust side and valve seats reground about 600 maybe a bit more thats with the head been resetup, also gettin acl bearins and arp rodbolts cant memba the cost of those.

how damaged is ur engine?

Yeah they way that reads it's a GE not a GZE and so no good to you.

Rebuild is the best way to go by far, get your parts from the right place at the right price and it'll work out a half decent price.

what exactly went bang in your 4agze?
iif its still together there is no point in guessing, pull it apart and inspect, then make a decision and either rebuild accordling or replace.

It ran a big end didn't it? Rebuild is by far the better option. Come see us, we'll look after you for bits 8)

the total cost of my 7AGE fully re-built including buying both the 4age and the 7afe new beraings, rings, machineing, polishing, balancing etc etc et is about $1500 from engine reconditioning specialists in chch.

Yeah spat some oil and ran a big end. Possibly front crank seal blew, will find out this weekend when I get the motor out.
If I bought that engine and put my GZE pistons and a normal head gasket in it could be cheaper. Once it is stripped down I will know! Fun.

na use that money to build your own, at least that way you know what your getting,
s/h ge/gze block / crank / rods arnt that expensive,

Well turns out it be nasty...
Finished disassembly tonight. Number one piston broke a ring land, destroying the piston, slightly damaging the head, and causing compression in the crankcase. This forced the front crank seal out, dropping oil pressure instantly, and running number four big end bearing. Bore one is badly scored, the other big ends and bores are marginal.
Also one of the head bolts sheared! and some of the head bolts are burnt?!? All crispy and black. This motor has had a hard life!
On the plus side I discovered it is an AE101 GTZ motor with oil jets and 8.9 pistons 8)
Going to the auto machinists next week to get the verdict...

Rebuild it chris then you know exacly what your getting, get that block a hone or a new block and start the parts process

Spend the dollars and build you a reliable 4agze that will still be reliable in years to come, one part of the car you wont have to worry about for a long time

And powerfull.....you gotta keep up with supras somehow :wink:
