choosing i/c piping size

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Wed Jun 20, 2007 8:27 pm

just sussing out some intercooler piping...

my...
turbo outlet --> air filter is 2"
turbo outlet --> intercooler is 1.75"
throttle body --> intercooler is 2.5"

so i've got a couple of options:

1) get individual intercooler piping to suit the above diameters, depending on where the piping is running to and from. im thinking this would possibly keep a better flow throughout...

2) get some 2 ¼ piping and use that for the whole setup and just use silicon reducers where needed. im just not sure if having reducers all over the place will effect the flow a heap...

anyone got any input?
thanks.

so air filter to turbo is 2"?,, seems very small!

be good to get a 3" inch filter that then connects to turbo (more air is better than not enough), reduce down to the turbo,, then run everything 2.5inch to intercooler to throttle body,, best would be if the cooler was 2.5inch in and out,, flow should not be restricted,, also stay away from like double sharp 90degree bends etc

if anyone has other ideas on this i would love to know

edit; i could even make sum real crap drawing on paint to explain wot i mean if confused, LOL

thats how i would do it 8)

yep, if its not 2" it might be 1.75". I may have got those measurements mixed up. it is just a standard vf10 turbo, could probably modify the intercooler tanks to have a 2.5" in/outlet. I don't have an air filter or anything, I can get whatever size filter so thats not a problem.

flow should not be restricted

what, if I have reducers on every pipe? or if I ran the setup as you described?

will remeasure tomorrow if I can and have a rethink!

for less lag run quite small form turbo to cooler and then as big as u can go on the other size

id use 3" air intake, and reduce the pipe at the turbo, not at the air filter end can restrict it otherwise.

2.1/4" from turbo to intercooler and back to throttle body, modify the intercooler to suit,

a 2.1/4" joiner will stretch over the throttle body reasonably easily and doesnt look out of place like a reducer can..

on 4ages
i dont like using 2" unless it supercharged and running front mount,

2.1/4" is a good size for small-medium sized turbos, will help with spool time,

2.5" is good on bigger engine / turbos and serious setups, on the average setup it can be laggy

ok maybe ill get round to doing a "superb" drawing soon (hahaha)

but yea for the air inlet to turbo you would want something nice and big 3inch then just reduce down to turbo! as for the vf10 2inch should be fine for piping or 2 1/4, but if its a realy short system eg side mount then 2.5 wont be laggy,
by not having reducers i mean stuff like if your cooler has 2.5 outlet dont go down to 2inch to TB. choose your size then go with it the whole way,, less money on joiners/reducers that way!

going off old zoom mag articles.. no point going bigger than the throttle body.. 4age is 55mm ish? 2.5" is pretty big for a vf10

im using VF10 turbo on my 7AFTE.

turbo outlet --> intercooler is 2.5"
intercooler --> throttle body is 2.5" initially till mid way reducers to 2" till TB.

I do have a thought of going 2.5" all the way out but i do think will lag.

it is a front mount in a rwd setup. I will probably be mounting the i/c higher than normal - and closer to th TB - so will need even less piping. is that a 'really short system'?

if that is short enough to run 2.5" I guess I may as well do it properly and run 2.5" from i/c to TB and 2 ¼" from turbo to i/c and modify the tanks to suit. I was just hoping to run all the same size piping if I could - because i'm lazy and didn't want the hassle of modifying the i/c tanks - but may as well do it right!
