Hi,

Thanks for that - That seems to be what I'm hearing from the dealers I've rung - so at this stage, unless I can fashion myself a dvd, it's looking a little bleak...

In any case, their doesn't seem to be a lot of altezza owners on here that have said they'd go in on the cost of the dvd if it did work, and I don't really want to pick up the $750 tab myself...

I'll get hold of a test dvd and see how that goes.

Thanks for your help people!

No worries

It's a bit tricky at the moment in that the system is so new in New Zealand (we only released it with the New Corolla in May) so dealers are quickly getting up to speed to understand what does and doesn't work.

Give the test disc a go and even call the dialogue centre on 0800TOYOTA - they may have access to some new info.

ill ask some questions.. but sounds dubious.
but seeing as new toyotas are now avail with satnav.. id say its possible theres something we can do

I'll think you'll find that the Sat-Nav sold with new toyota's is VDO branded.
and if so you'll find that it's actaully pre-sales installed thru the dealer.

We are the agents for it in our area, but the Toyota dealer have not actually sold one yet, but no wonder with the price.

The disc's are all encoded to the player and life-timed.
We are not allowed to enable them as the customer has to do it when the recieve the vehicle as the disc lasts for 3 years from the date you activate it and it is not allowed to run out while the car is under warranty.
There is a small part fo the program that we can use to program calibrate and test it but can actually use the navigation as in type in addresses etc.

We have to ring the Satnav supplier and give them the satnav unit serial number and disc serial number and they give us the code to enter in fot it to work. Then the customer activates it for 3 years then has to but a new disc for a fee. That's so that the system is always up to date.

I went to a 3 day course on it all and they are very complicated and tricky units.

The VDO are fitted as new to Toyota Holden and Fords. Same control unit with different screen's and mounts.

I'll get the info book out tomorrow and post up more if you want to know more.

Hey Matt, in response to your comment, the Toyota system isn't VDO branded. From memory they are a Denso product and we use Whereis data discs. Discs aren't encoded to specific navi units so you can take the disc with you if you sell the vehicle - can also upgrade discs easily when updates are available. There also aren't limitations on how long the discs will last for so you can run the same DVD data disc for as long as you like.

I'm sure that as more new Toyota's are sold with this system we'll see that it's a very useful and user-friendly system.

Hey dont laugh at that.

With the VDO system you can add extra modules and then,

select restaraunt,
select nearest,
it comes up on the screen with address and ph number,
press dial and it connects to your ph in your pocket via bluetooth and dail it thru the handsfree kit in the car.

No shit. just have to buy the extra modules to add on to get the bluetooth handfree kit part.

Heh - yeah i know.
My sat nav now has heaps of "points of interest" build in, and it even has a place to record your services, when you did an oil change, e.t.c.

I bet those modules are nice and cheap too - probably about $500 each?

The base systems are around 5-7000 depending on screen setup's, i'd say the modules are a bit more than $500 lol

Probably why we have never done one yet.

I haven't kept up with pricing and the course was a year and a bit ago so prices may havew change.

Was an option on NZ new Prado only, no other toyota models.

Genuine Toyota system has Bluetooth capability, Points of Interest (+ capacity to press a button and call them), street addresses, at least 4-disc MP3/WMA CD changer and lots more all standard :)

Slightly off topic, but sort of related -

Just been looking at the Aussie Altezza forums, and apparently, there is a TV aux in plug you can get?

If you want to use the TV AUX input you have to get the plug / adapter from Toyota.
It doesn't plug into the back of the head unit, but rather into the TV tuner in the boot.
Available overnight from Toyota Japan.

Do you know anything about this Mr Revhead?
