Celica boxes

Postby Erelyes » Sun Jun 24, 2007 12:48 am

Hi there

The st162 celica gearboxes are apparently naff, commonly pop out of 2nd and/or 3rd, etc etc.

I was wondering what other cars to look for at pickapart that will share the same kind of gearbox.

LSD non essential, but if pickapart doesn't know they're lsd, may as well get one that is! Minor mods to 'make it fit' are fine, anything mr WOF man won't pick up (such as a rangi welded gearbox mount, if they happen to be different!)

Also, what IS it that goes on these gearboxes - is rebuilding an option? Can do it myself, so labour not a problem...

They suffer the typical synchro problem, which can also lead to blowing gears altogether! I blew 2nd gear, and my diff was on its way out... Started as a synchro issue tho.

Pretty much anything with a gen 1/2/3 3SGE will fit AFAIK. The box is a S53. Comes in ST162 Celica and Corona GTRs. They later changed to the box to a S54, altho i cannot remember if it was in the ST18x or the ST20x.

ST150/160/170, when you get into the 180/190/200 gear boxes they take a different LH inner axle. Make sure you get one with the starter motor in the same location.

Are you able to use the later axles in the '162 hubs? With my old ST162, i was told the box i blew up was one from a ST182, because it was physically different to the ST162 box we replaced it with..

Right so I guess I look at pickapart for anything saying S53 on the build plate, and with low kms!

And if I was to switch to an S54 would grabbing the LH (passengers?) inner axle make it fit? And I assume if the starter motors in a different spot, I can grab one of those as well?

I saw a bellhousing thread that explained that two boxes with the startermotors on diff sides could fit the same motor, but upper right hole had to be slotted, but the code usage confused the heck out of me as to what those boxes actually came in!

you'll need the sandwich plate between the motor and g'box to make it work with a different starter location.

they should physically all look the same with 6 or 8 bolts (cant recall which) around the diff housing area where ther LH axle goes into it
