This may be dredging up an old thread, but this reply has been sitting in my head being mulled over for a while.

Method, you are right, in that initially it will make problems worse, people will keep cars longer.
But, as life goes on, older cars become more troublesome to maintain, and people will have to either upgrade to a newer car, or move to using public transport.

I don't think that there will be much upward change in the price of new cars. The demand will be higher yes, but there will also be a larger supply of them.

New car prices may actually have to come down to meet the changing market, as there will be greater demand for features that the newer imports will have, and that most entry level new cars don't(at this stage).

I'm not saying that this is the best change to make, far from it, but I understand where they are coming from with it.

The "Boy Racers"
Now this is where I see the biggest change.
This group of people I think will end up having to move towards the V8 crowd, simply because a Falcon or Commodore is dirt cheap for the power, and quite a bit of fun... and cheap/fast honda/Levin/Trueno/skyline/impreza/lancer/whatever wont be as readily available as they are today.

I don't think it is necessarily a "bad thing", but agree with the others that emmisions testing is probably a better way.

our population is small really compared to the world. I doubt it will change the world pollution rate much even if all of us started riding bicycles to work.

A few people Ive talked to (from a couple of car yards around Dunedin) say they would be really surprised if the law did get passed. There confident it wont go through, aparently theres too many loopholes or problems with it. just my 2 cents

Also in relation to this did anyone else see the other legislation their trying to push around the taxes on engine size?
I cant remember all the details, but basically under the current proposal a v6 commodore or ford (yes not even a v8) would cost approx the same as a current 5? series bmw? How rediculous is this!!!!! How much would a 5 series beemer cost after this?

I think all Hellie the Trannie wants us to drive smart cars or walk everywhere.

Yeah way to go LTSA!

I think it should be compulsory for all employees of LTSA to own a car, then they would at least understand the issues facing drivers today & how life is in the real world. Cause as i understand it alot of the people who work for LTSA especially in the policy devision dont have cars, some don't even have their licence.
If i was their HR advisor i would ask the qestion how much they drive a week, if it was less than 100k then bye bye we dont want you to work here.

Rant over
