I am with you on that one Guru...how are you quantifying this? Is that just your opinion or are you basing this on facts?

As for the original question.....think fivebob summed it up quite nicely....its all about a little thing called R.O.E

ok, someone show me anything to show that americas cup is a huge major international sporting event watched and followed by hundreds of millions worldwide. every year.

ppl in nz have to realise we = stuff all. whats big here, is barely a blip anywhere else....

anyway, im not against it... as iv already im against the government spending on it....

how much of the revenue gathered by some of those yacht places is a direct return from the governments input? i reckon if the gov hadnt paid that $$$ it wouldnt have changed one cent....

Revvy, thing to remember about the America's cup is that while the people who are into it are in fewer numbers, those that are usually wipe their bums with $100 bills.

Most of the people who are into watching WRC etc can only afford to wipe our bums with kleenex. 3 ply if we're lucky
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Been to both this year - WRC (Rally of Acropolis) and Louis Vuitton and Americas Cup racing and definately enjoyed the sailing alot more (may have been due to the alcohol and hot women on boats but I digress). Sure its more costly to attend but hell its worth it.

And coverage was huge over here in Europe and also the states. Do they even show WRC in the states?

And it's pretty hard to compare an annual sports event to something that only happens every 4 years or so like the Americas Cup, Rugby World Cup, Football World Cup, Olympics.

Mr Revhead wrote:wtf do you think that over the course of 4 years more ppl watch americas cup than both a1gp and wrc combined?

No, but more people would watch it than would watch the NZ rounds of WRC & A1GP. We're in the wrong timezone to benefit from locally held events. Especially one that only commands a couple of hours viewing in the middle of the night like A1GP.

You also have to look at the exposure that NZ gets out of an event, in motor racing the venue get very little exposure, it's all about the cars & drivers. But in the yachting Team New Zealand get mentioned every minute for two hours of everay race they're in over a 3 month period, plus there are the 15 other regattas that the America's Cup boats compete in in the lead up to the cup, so I say the exposure NZ get to it's target audience (people with money to spend visiting the country) in much greater with the Yachting than and Motorsport events held here.

So you're happy with them investing in it them...good on you for seeing what so many other fools fail to grasp. It's an investment not a donation ;)
