redtop into AE85/6

Postby rollaholic » Sun Jul 08, 2007 12:06 pm

i have a smallport redtop to fit into my AE85/6, and i was wondering what i should be looking out for / doing as preperation for the transplant.

from my reading of searches, it seems i will need the following -

new intake manifold (presumably cut'n'shut fwd one)
redtop ECU

i also have a loom to match the redtop, but of course its in FWD configuration. how much does it need to be modified? im hoping to be able to do the actual conversion over one weekend, so my cars not off the road / taking up a hoist at work for longer than needed - so i want to get as much ready as possible before i start to minimise hassles.

cheers!

One weekend will be pushing it, suppose it depends on how tidy you want things done. Do you have all the bits?, radiator hose?, Rwd water lines/pump?, have you got a RWD exhaust manifold and exhaust system? accelerator cable etc..etc....

Are you wanting to use a electric fan or a the engine driven fan, what gearbox are you planning on using?

sorry i should have been more specific - the car already has a bluetop in it, i'm an apprentice mechanic so getting a waterpump / cambelt setup etc wont be a problem.

the car currently has an electric radiator fan, which is switched in cabin - i'll be looking at getting it back on thermo switching once the redtop is installed, but in terms of getting the car back on the road i wasnt too worried about that.

You may have to get a new flywheel as the blue top uses 6 bolts to hold it on where as the small port is 8 bolts

i hadnt thought of that - i think i have the flywheel / clutch setup from the redtop somewhere though. are there any problems using the FWD clutch setup in the RWD box?

since when does a blue top fly have 6 bolts?? the blue top fly is smaller thats the differenct i pretty sure. just rape the water bits and alt etc etc off the bluetop as FWD a d RWD belts run slightly different offsets in the pullys. Id be inclined to just cut and solder the plugs that need replacing rather than lenghtening thw whole loom or there is a guy on trade me that does looms (de loomed) for like $160

well thats the kind of info im after - but how will the redtop run on the bluetop ecu? im not in a hurry to get the engine installed, and im happy to lengthen the appropriate parts of the loom if its going to get me a better end result.

any idea what the guys username is or something?

Early model blue tops had 6 bolt holding the flywheel.

also, whats the best way to ID looms? looking at the ECU plugs on the loom i have, its got two yellow plugs (10 pin and 18 pin) according to

http://www.club4ag.com/faq%20and%20tech ... 088-89.htm

that makes it a tvis loom - does this mean it belongs to a bigport redtop?

Or maybe a Tvis bluetop, smallport ecu plugs are grey.
