Where do you mount your fire extinguisher?

Pretty simple question, so regardless of it being a road or race car, where do you mount your extinguisher?
Im planning on installing one in a car infront of/under the front passenger seat, but have seen mounted in rear1/4, boot etc.

Yeah I'm mounting mine on the passenger side of the trans tunnel but close enough that I can still grab it in a hurry if I needed to.

dosn't impede getting in/out of car and is really close for when the co-driver mucks up a call!!!

Mine's mounted on the trans tunnel right behind the handbrake. Out of the way, but I can reach it while I'm still in the seat.

I'm sure you could get one at a safety shop.

When I first got my extinguisher I left it on the back seat in its box for a few weeks, and it lost its pressure, was I just unlucky and managed to get a bung unit or did I do something wrong here? (wouldn't expect it to do that regardless of where I left it??) none of the powder stuff came out of it, just whatever gas pressurises it.

Don't they have an expiry date on them somewhere specifying when they are no longer any good or should be re-tested?

Try a safety sotre for the bracket. Some of the S/cheap ones have steel brackets. In saying that, a plastic one should last.

Im assuming the lost pressure extinguisher had a gauge? - many of them can be re-filled. But I would get it checked also, shouldnt loose pressure that soon if new.

Yes, for motorsport use they have to be retested every 5 years, if they don't have a gauge it's every year

There was a repco or supercheap pamphlet I saw about 2 days ago that had them with gauge and metal brackets for $22 or something crazy like that!

Nah it shouldnt loose pressure. I have had a few and one of them is about 3 years old. Pressure is still good when tested.

also slightly off topic, is it true an insurance company will write-off a car when dry powder has been used? do you guys have dry powder or CO2?

We used dry powder in our landrover once, made a hell of a mess. And it went off in the trailer after that as well. I don't know if they wouldnt pay out as I can imagine you would be able to vacuum it up. I would go with Co2 though

ABC's are corrosive. Cleanable, but may damage various car materials...insurance wise it could be case by case, so worth enquiring (assuming you dont use it to intentially write off lol).
Damage from the powder would be the least of my problems in a car fire though.

I know it's okay for a road car, but I'd be a little bit sus about there for a circuit car, mainly because I wouldn't be confident of being able to reach it while in a harness. I know it doesn't make much difference cause you're gonna be in the process of getting the hell outta the car as soon as, but if there's flame I'm gonna have one hand on the harness release and the other on the extinguisher, specially if the driver's door's jammed into a wall or something.

Shit, I hope the Mrs. never reads this, she'll never let me go racing again (I got no life insurance....)

got mine in the landcruiser mounted between the passenger and driver seat - no centre console, its also easily available for the passengers in the rear too if for some reason i cant get to it..

yep, supercheap.... $22 each, im gonna go buy another one to keep the one i already have company.

I went to Wormald (sp?) and got quoted $50 or $60 for a decent motorsport type extinguisher. Haven't bought it yet because it is for my road car and i'm still trying to decide where to put it so i don't have to drill any holes, and don't particulary want it inside the car either (not for daily driving duties anyway).
