Aristo 94 , 2jz gte.. help me clarify if this engine is gud?

Postby jdm 102 » Fri Jul 20, 2007 10:53 pm

Hey fellas .. it's time to go Levin Gtz

now to the car that I have my eyes set on , (which I'd like some professional views on as well) . is this..

If anyone has experience with these or can advise , please tell if there is anything in particular I should look out on the Vr-4s ? its a 5 speed tiptronic gearbox, 90,010kms.. theres (what they call) tappet noise (have a report from Option 1 to prove that its tappets only and bottom end is fine) .. it looks sweet and drives pretty decent (compared to the Aristo :P) .. just felt a shudder effect on hard braking which they say is front rotors requiring machining..

Are tappets easy to fix ? and anything in particular that I should look out on these ?

Cheers :)

All Mitsis get noisy tappets, not normally that early though. The only proper cure is to replace lifters. Dunno what they go for over there, but aftermarket you're still looking at $40 ish each.
The tiptronics are pretty weak too. Cambelt service jobs on those are horrible, the belt itself is about $200 retail.

Stay away from it!
These are notorious for tappet noise, blown turbos, and blown transmission.
Also plenty usual mitsi problems as standard.
Tappet noise would indicate that the odo been messed with or the car has not been serviced regularly.
Cambelt will cost you (so the water pump).
Transmission can let go without any indication.

Wise move, you're really opening yourself up for a massive repair/maintenance bill by buying it.

ok this particular car needs 100,000kms service soon,

can anyone give me a run down as to how much parts for this cost exactly anyway?

I was suggested that if its in good nic right now, install transmission fluid cooler, oil cooler , regular oil changes (4000kms with good oil) 100 octane only ..

I'm not sure on this 'exact' Galant .. but to be honest, it was decent for the drive and gripped like omfg...

dont buy it, for any reason, under any circumstances, at any price. they are notoriously problematic, massively expensive to fix... quite possibly the worst car mitsubishi ever made (and thats saying something), especially with a tiptronic.

I'm glad I posted here to ask.. because something was telling me hmm in NZ considering all the imports they have, they must have a good idea about that car lol...

and as I just asked a mechanic (well he works on Evos only) , he also said to 'avoid' it , no parts at all.

Cheers fellas

my Levin Gtz is pretty much sold, so I gotta start hunting for a car

Aristo 2jz gte yeh? 8) ... my only concern with that, Auto transmission again  are those ones any reliable or decent to put up with ?

Thanks alot people, really appreciate it.

2jzgte is pretty much the strongest engine out of japan an i believe the turbo one will be quicker then the vr4, auto box can shift quick as well after just shimming the accumulators.....i have a soarer 1jzgte which made 220rwkw on dyno yesterday on just basic mods imagine the possibility with a 2jzgte

yes it can,

the guys said to get a service done once I get it , as they reckon for compliance the workshop really only uses jus adequate quality oil for it..

engine flush and nice oil and should be fine if I keep up the oil changes every 4-5,000kms

what sorta ron rating is the 2jz recommended at? 98 ? 100?

cheers

Hi

From experience 2 suggestions I would make are:

a) Make sure your insurance cover includes a free replacement windscreen as the Aristo windscreens are suprisingly expensive.

b) Look at getting one of those 2-3 year mechanical warranty type things from the dealer. Many parts on the aristo are made of high quality materials which cost an arm and leg to replace and may need to be shipped from Japan. It's always nicer if the dealer can take care of the cost :)

Other than that they're a great sleeper car and are deceptively quick :D
