Theres a bullshit generalisation Wayne.... The majority of Japanese people who are permanently in NZ are here from after the war... ie My Grandma ... And the majority of new Asians in new zealand coming here to live are not Japanese. Sorry to drag up this thread again and take it off track a bit butt:

EP82 VS AW11 at Manfeild in stock form with 2 novice drivers = AW11 wins

Tuned EP82 vs AW11 (Same) at Manfeild = pwn on straights, would beat the hell out of me if she could corner :P .

EP82 Stock vs ae86 with novice drives I would assume the ae86 would win but it would be very close



And Finally Stock AW11 vs Stock AE86 with a more experianced driver in the 86 and the AW11 wins :P .


Although having said that I think that the ae86 has more potential to go fast because there are far more people who have raced and rallied them over the years, knowhow = fast car. The Aw11 takes a bit to learn to drive and to find a good set up but once you have it they are a really good car. Possibly have more limits then an AE86 as far as cheap suspension mods go though.


And Leon - AW11 = AWesome clubsport car, they are fast on dirt cause of traction and the fact that they are nimble, fast on motokhana cause of short wheelbase and a good track car in stock form. Good allrounder if you can "harness the power" :P .

Actually, as I've raced two of them at Clubsport level, my opinion is that it's nice on a track, but an absolute pile of pooh for loose surface low speed stuff as they tend to understeer like a SOB.

The top driver in the Hibiscus Coast Car Club (I believe Caveman is a member?) drives an AW11 on dirt.

I don't see why they couldn't be a good car for it. Sure, they understeer a bit when you push them, but crickey, its not that hard to make them power over when you need it!

Yeah I haven't found the understeer to be a problem at all, mine seems fine on grass and gravel but it does take pretty different corner set up to a fwd or regular rwd.

Maybe your one had pooze front shocks?

Also please note: understeer qualified in previous post as being at low speed. This rather important disclaimer appears to have been overlooked by following posts. But is very important because I mostly do autocross events, which are by and large first and second gear events.

Yeah I can see where you're coming from there, haven't had too many problems with low speed autocrossing though.

Hmm I didn't notice this until now. The only steel and sh*t I added was engine mounts (3kg tops over standard mounts) and some tubing in the front to make up for all the stuff I'd already cut out (4kg max). But then I drive my car every day and it's fully road legal - we have different ways of doing sh*t basically :P

For the record the weight of my car, with about 1/4 tank of gas and all fluids, w/a intercooler etc is 1069kg

AW11s seem to be heavier than many realise, a standard manual SC is over 1100kgs, but an earlier model NA manual gets closer to 1000kg, from what I've seen.

As for the question at hand, I've never driven an AE86 but I much prefer mid-engined cars over front engined ones.

yeah they are not the 800kg lightweights some ppl think

mine was 985 with 1/4 tank of gas.
that was with stripped interioe and sound deadning removed.
was preface lift n/a with s/c and water to air.

if you really tried and were a light weight you could get a n/a one under 1000 with driver.

I'd have to say the ae86, In past experiences , and i know the road doesn't substitute for the race track) But ae86 would be alot easier to learn to drive round a race track if it makes any sense. Aw11's in my experience have a nasty tendency to do all sort of wonderful things in the rear end when inducing power oversteer. AE86's are alot more forgiving where, you can control the back end of the car's behaviour alot easier and in my experience know where the kimit is before you end up swapping ends round a corner.
Also state what you mean by "standard". There are alot of supposedly standard aw11's and ae86's out there, but some have more mods than others, specially in the handling department

I'd agree with that, mainly becase of the nature of MR vs FR cars. With the engine in the front, you get more weight there (usually) which won't grip as much in the corners, but when it starts to loose it, it doesn't just give out all at once.
With an MR, theres (usually) more weight in the rear, so when she goes, she usually just goes and you've gotta have some pretty good handywork to get her back in line!

Theres always sacrifices with handling. Make it grip more, its less forgiving when it lets go!
