Getting into clubsport?

I have a few questions about getting into a bit of clubsport. I really only want to do fun/casual things like auto crosses and the odd sprint etc..

What is the best way to get involved? At the moment i just have the aw11, but i'm looking for a ae92/ fwd starlet to strip out and have my way with :P.

Join car club (various)

Get clubsport licence for www.motorsport.org.nz

Find out what events are going on locally. Do lots of events.

Your closest club would be Hibiscus Coast Motorsport Club (which, co-inidentally, I happen to be on the committee of... :lol: ) - feel free to throw any questions my way. Even better, come along to our next clubnight on August 15 and meet some of the guys (PM me for details). Plenty of guys are running EP Starlets, along with a handful of Corollas (like me), MR2s (like Caveman) and a couple of indecently quick Civics and CRXs and all are more than happy to share their knowledge with newcomers.

We don't actually have many ClubSport type events scheduled until November because of the number of Rallysprints and Rallies on at the moment, but we will be running a number of Motorkhanas and Autocrosses over the summer months. Also, October-December is the Auckland region Interclub Hillclimb Series with both gravel and tarmac events scheduled.
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

Definately try out a motorkhana, tonnes of fun! I had a blast even tho 4WDs are great on tight courses :lol:. Will go again once my cars going again (i stripped it straight after the event :cry:)

I'm out West Auckland way and have been considering getting into this as well. Anyone able to point me in the direction of a car club out that way?

Nothing out west really (unless you count Auckland Car Club, which is central but doesn't run any ClubSport events). You'll be in either Hibiscus Coast Motorsport Club or South Auckland Car Club territory...

Look out for the summer Motorkhana series in Massey, I should hopefully have some info on it in the next few weeks. Grass (= easy on the car), can use your roadie, cheap and lots of fun. And if you've never competed before you can do 2 of them without joining a club (kinda like a try-before-you-buy deal, only more fun :D )

Brilliant. That sounds like a great way to start out, especially since I probably will be using my road car.

Join Hibiscus its a great club ..

then do the fortron rally series ..

best value skids you can get !

(its mainly on gravel tho .. so no pussies)

Should scare the pants off most drift pilots !

I too am interested in clubsport events and have joined www.HCMC.org.nz (Hibiscus).
1st event for me tomorrow, tarmac climb should be good.
just hope i pass scrutineering (sp?)
been told battery needs to have min of 4 m10 anchorages ? could lift the car with that.

That is not correct.

If it is in the cabin, it needs to have 8mm iso 8.8 bolts, but we don't say how many.

If it isn't in the same air space as the driver (eg: separate boot compartment, or in the engine bay) then it merely has to be securely attached with the positive terminal isolated).

interesting you mention that....
in recent discussions i have been told that if its a sedan and its in the boot then it just needs to be secured, not sealed.
even if the boot is open to the cabin. eg a certain ae92 clubcar.

Not true revhead, most people seperate the boot with a sheet of aluminum or something. Or just box and vent the battery.

Its pretty easy to figure out why

im well aware of why, and what ppl normally do... in this case im talking about a specific car here in wellington
and the section of the manual i was pointed to, didnt say anything about the boot having to be sealed (in relation to the battery, not fuel)

ie the letter of the law allows a car such as an ae92 sedan with the rear seats removed (thereby having the boot open to the cabin) to have a wet battery mounted in the boot without a battery box.


please note, im not arguing here, im merely relating what i was told by 2 ppl who should know....

If you want to pass it along, here is the breakdown of the bits that specifically state what needs to be done.

Page 120, Manual 33, Book One. Definitions.
"Cockpit means the structural inner volume of a vehicle which accommodates the driver and any passengers"
That, I am pretty sure is the bit that hasn't been read.

same book, page 133
"(b) Batteries located in the cockpit shall; .... insulated metal clamps .... independently attached leakproof box vented to the vehicle exterior ...."
abridged

So now they've got until October 21st or so to fix it (or 14th if doing Wairongomai Road).

Guts of rule: Battery acid on driver is bad, mmmmmkay.

that was my (commonsense) understanding of it!

yes that definition of "cockpit" changes it.
just i couldnt find it in the book in the quicl look i had.

as for battery acid, yes iv had that on my skin before. not cool.
