T50 TRD Close Box - what oil?

Postby Dunny » Thu Aug 09, 2007 2:23 pm

I've done a search but didn't seem to find any specific references to close ratio boxes.

I'm wanting to know of a top oil to use, I've invested a decent amount of $ on a new box so not going to skimp on oil.

Some say redline is the go and others advise to steer clear, so any input from people who have close ratio RWD boxes what experiences have you had?

Dedicated race car application.

Cheers

castrol of the correct type has always been my preference.

never used redline except for the water wetter which is fantastic.
lots of ppl have said redline is crap with lines like "if you saw inside a box thats used it youd know why"
yet they never seem to be able to show any pics or anything....
just as many ppl have said its the only thing that keeps thier box alive.

Thanks Warwick

I have redline in my diff and no complaints so far.

I have been told Redline AT W90 EP, by all accounts I guess thats an auto trans fluid.

Any idea of recommended viscosity?

gbox oil

If you have a bit of spare cash, go to BNT and buy heavy duty redline shockproof gear oil. It's expensive though: $27 per 900ml. But trust me you wont regret it.

And it's expecially good for older boxes like the old T50 - it'll sort any whines out and prolong the life of your box.

Especially considering you're going to give it a pretty hard time no doubt.

If that's too steep for you, just get castrol or valvoline or whatever well known brand, sae 75w-90 or 80w-90

It's basically a new box, new gear kit, synco sleeves, bearings etc, so don't need the oil to sort out any whines etc

Happy to spend the money if that's going to make a happy gearbox.

Just had a squiz on the redline site and found the shockproof heavy gear oil, assuming that's what you were reffering too

Thanks

I run and have run a TRD close ratio t50 in my tarmac car for some time and the only oil I will use in it is Castrol VMX, the box has given no problems at all .I have competed in all type of events from Targas to hillclimbs and circuit.
I used to use redline in my diff , TRD lsd and destroyed a couple of crown wheels, so changed to Castrol LSX90 and have not had a problem since. As a 4.8 ratio maybe the loadings are better suited to the castrol oil, all cw&p were brand new and set up by the same person.

Thats my 2 cents worth

Coming out this weekend dunny?

NZae86. anyreason you run lsx90 with your trd lsd? the TRD recommendation is GL5 85W140.

My Theory is buy middle of the range oil and change it often rather tahn uber expensive stuff changed every so often, and at least castrol stuff you can get anywheel!

Great thanks for that information , good to hear 1st hand experience with the same set up as I have. Mine is a dedicated track car.

Hmm interesting about your diff comments, I may need to re consider the redline I use currently while the diff is apart to fit the new c/w&p

We also have used VMX without issue in numerous rally cars.

Bit of an old post.. but the closest I could find with the info I need...

How much oil do i need for my diff? I just had a new crown wheel and pinion fitted after wrecking one. Based on this advice/experiences I might give the LSX a go.
What sort of quantities am I looking at?
Also someone once said I could try over filling the diff a bit as it might help to prevent destroying more stuff. Thoughts?

Not sure on quantaties as not sure what diff you have (assume T series)

But def. overfill if it's going to see track time or your c/w & p will be singing before you know it. Don't go overboard on over filling (if that makes sense) otherwise it will be spilling out your breather.
