Wrong, it is going to affect if you get a ticket or a warning. If the cop is under pressure to deliver his quota, then you may get a ticket for something that only really warrants a warning. I personally know at least one cop who is under pressure precisely because he prefers to educate and warn rather than revenue raise

What the hell is warning going to do?

Why should people get off a ticket?

For $&#$% sake people. Im not wrong. The "quotas" these people are talking about are only a few tickets a fcuking day. Its not going to matter.

If this country had some balls they would force EVERY COP TO GIVE OUT EVERY TICKET THEY CAN. Then people might wake up.

NZ's seem to have this mind set that when you do something wrong, you shouldn't be punished. Perhaps if they were, they might learn to obey the rules, and perhaps maybe even not crash....

So now you agree there are quotas, you're just arguing about how big they are

FYI it affects more than the general public, some police officers don't like it either and would rather do their job properly rather than just be paid tax collectors for Aunty Helen

Nope wrong again, if this country had balls it would educate people properly and there wouldn't be the need to enforce every stupid rule regardless of the circumstances. But that's never going to happen, tickets bring in too much money to the public purse for the politicians to do anything sensible.

I agree with Slightly in that if you're not doing anything illegal, then you're fine. If you're breaking the law (a miss is as good as a mile), and you get penalized for it, you have no one to blame but yourself. Having said that, as Fivebob said, its a pity that its got to the point where the ambiguity around the "quotas" has left it looking very much like a revenue gathering exercise.

*shrug* maybe I've just been lucky to not get picked on, but in all the years I've been driving, the only times I've EVER been pulled over and fined is when I've done something stupid that deserved it. It may have been 60 in a 50 ... its still breaking the law. Who is to say when the line is "allowed" to be blurred between warning and penalty? Anyone who's been let off with a warning in the past should count themselves lucky. Driving is a privilege, not a right. Those who abuse the privilege should rightly lose that advantage.

To the original poster - have you taken into account the area you were pulled over? Is it not possible that the surroundings may have made your exhaust sound louder than it was to someone outside the vehicle? I'll be very interested to find out what the DB reading on your exhaust is when it gets tested, please post the results!

+1 for induction noise > exhaust noise ;)

PS: Keep it friendly please everyone, this thread is getting some decent debate going, don't get it locked with outbursts and personal attacks.

No, im not agreeing there are quota, with the expection of what I said above re: the expectations.

Do you honestly think a police officer should be able to warn everyone without giving tickets? If they ticketed everyone there would be a lot less people breaking the laws in a very short time period.

Wheres the deterrent? I agree money may not be the best way to punish people, but how else are you going to do it? Two tickets and you lose your licence? Gold star reward system? Naughty corner?

Got tested at 96.7dba without the silencer in and still tested at 96.4dba ish with it in lol. I wrote in to the police and the letter i got back basically said that any car that has a exhaust signifcantly louder then it was from standard can be ticketed, so anyone with and exhaust can be ticketed whereever and whenever the police see fit. Its no biggy anymore anyway, crashed my car :D:D. But i will give in and pay the fine, just thourght it was worth ago.

Yeah everyone keep my thread friendly!!! Everyone knows the police have a quota :P:P

Couple of years ago, I was looking at buying a MKIV supra. I went down to Wellington and looked at an aerotop version. I Drove it for 30 mins. Absolutely loved it. But I got pulled over 4 times in that 30 minutes. Each time the police officer -a different one told me it was a random check. There was nothing wrong with the car each time. However, I have been on the other side where I perhaps should have been pulled up but haven't been.

IMHO:

MOST cops are fine. But it's like anything, there are a few who think that they are still in high school and can now legally bully people so they will.

I think it's just the stigma some cars get. And the fact that a supra with a hole in the roof to some wet behind the ears cop would look modified... heavily so.
Brute force and ignorance always prevails.

Failure comes from too little brute force, or too little ignorance.

Perhaps its because we are human and some times DO make mistakes...
eg in an unfamiliar area and because of concentrating on the letterbox numbers missed a speed sign etc...
Or misjuded a corner and made a noise with your tyres...

These are just some situations which the person may "legally" be in the wrong, but a little discretion on the part of the officer can go a long way.

Besides if they wanted to they could easily enough put on your record if you had been given a warning etc and what for...

Your never made a mistake?

The above story is just another case of natural selection. An average 17 year old knows the difference between right and wrong surely!

sister is clearly just as retarded, quote:

"Why can't they take the licence plate number and come around on Saturday morning and say, `We're impounding your car and giving you a $600 fine', instead of having an outcome like this?"

Reasons for not doing this are also car could be stolen, fake plates etc, so they go fine some innocent person? thats fair haha.

again, retarded...

Why do they chase them? If they run from a stop, chances are they could be a drunk driver! They might KILL someone other than themselves on the road.

Typical bloody kids around that age. Always trying to lay the blame somewhere else and not take responsibility.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Just ... wow.

Her little brother is exactly the kind of idiot NZ DOESN'T want on the streets. He had previous run-ins with the law regarding his driving. IMO his parents shouldn't have allowed him to buy a car until he demonstrated he could drive one without trying to be a hero.

Its sad that he had to die, but bloody good riddance off the road. Just glad it was only him who died, and not his passenger / anyone else near to the accident :?

NZ is going to be as bad as the States soon, where burglars have successfully sued the owners of the houses they're robbing, when they hurt themselves in the process of breaking and entering :x

I do have one query, How do the cops stop people who run from the police? Aside from knowing where the person being chased is going to go, and laying spikes, how?
I think if I ran from the police, the only chance of catching me would be if they chased me with lots of cars and blocked up the road (like on the american cop chase programs), if I crash, or if I run out of gas before they do.
I would have thought that all those outcomes are pretty stupid... does anyone have any statistics of how many car chases turn into the criminal surrendering?
