chroming

Postby malc » Mon Aug 27, 2007 11:13 am

Anyone know of a place in Auckland that has good (cheap) prices on getting parts chromed, wanting to get 2 bumbers done, while trying to spend as little as possible.
cheers

i dont think chroming is cheap

i have a friend who works in a restoration type panel shop, they had a couple of (quite small) bumpers off an AC cobra replica chromed, at a cost of something like $400 each from memory

Cheap chrome jobs come up shit, if you can't afford to get a good job done then wait til you can...its just not worth it.
FWIW, I got quoted $250 to strip and rechrome a KE70 bumper by a local company.
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time
OMG so shiny!

yea metal sorry.

they are just going on the race car, so don't have to be absolutely perfect, we dont want to paint them as that would just look like rubbish on an rx3.
We repainted the car after we got it and the bumpers had been painted to fit that previous paint sceme.
Chrome is the only way to go as far as I can see and was just checking if anyone had come across any fair prices.
thanks

why not prep it and get a sign writer to stick the mirror vinyl on it?

That's what a lot of race cars that we sell fiberglass copy bumpers to do.

Otahuhu Chrome Platers are probably the best around. Chrome aint cheap and youve gotta get it done properly or its see through or it flakes off. Gotta say mirror vinyl sounds a little lame too.

Also thought about chrome painting.

i'd seen it done one starlet bumpers, its all in the prep work. if you clean it real good and apply the mirror vinyl, for say 5 m away, looks ok.. close up, its similar to orange peel on a paint job.

chrome spray paint... well, tried that.. they are not that shiny.

have you thought about polishing them up ? not to sure what the bumpers would be made out of ? but they could come up quite nice all polished up and then a laquer over the top to stop them from oxidising (turning shite)
