mid 90's SSS Sentra sedans - factory SR20DE, so 140hp and about 1000kg - economical, cheap, reliable. and quick...

If you want stupid fast with economy, do the SR20VE transplant, and have 190-205hp from a stock 2 litre NA.

I just picked up a '94 Nissan NX-R coupe(again sr20de) for $2250 in great condition, so bang for buck is excellent too.

Having said that, OP is still gonna have trouble getting insurance as its a "performance engine". Guessing that he's quite young, so will be screwed for insurance regardless (unless insured under parents' name).

Seriously, if you want reliable, relatively cheap, and quick (quick enough for NZ speed limits anyway), get a cheap ae101 or ae111. Dirt cheap, easy to fix, tons of parts, easy on gas ... they're no WRX performance-wise, but no slouch either. Just learn to drive it properly, and unless you're on a track or strip, a WRX won't leave you behind that badly.

a lot of ppl have major drama insuring an AE111
hard to beleive but true.
so ae101 would be my pic if ae111 is too hard

Get an AW11 MR2 :lol: quick-ish coz of their size, engines are dime a dozen, and parts arent THAT hard to get!

Have been changing jobs over the last 8 months, so didn't have the opportunity to get on many forums - now things have settled down I can get back to being my normal(not the best word :lol: ) self again :-)

Of the toyota marque, the AE101 hatch springs to mind as a good choice, bone stock a solid performer, then once you've got some insurance history behind you then there's the easy options of forced induction, 3sge swap, etc.

heh, the Lada Niva is actually quite a nice little cheap 4wd... nothing seems overly wrong with them, and when the engine craps itself, one of the nissan 2L(CA20?) slots right in including engine mounts and gearbox etc.

A mate used to have one at high school.

this thread is going no-where, but how about a 3 litre mivec diamante, 190+kw, 11-13k's litre and they are selling for under 4k all the time.

Haha yeah. I love that, ~201kw - one made about the same as my old Prelude at a dyno day we were both at. Unless my Prelude was making ~190kw @ engine, methinks there is some optimism there. They do go ok though.
