My TVIS has me confused?!

Postby toymachine » Fri Aug 31, 2007 9:20 pm

Ok reading around and doing a few tests all i've managed to do if confuse myself, and second guess myself, etc etc as to whether or not my TVIS is working.

My trueno has the podfilter setup as shown below, inside the previous owner has placed a sensor thats quite long, red and with a pointed tip ( roughly =|==> kind of shape ), which I assumed is something to do with airflow.

Now this is where i've gotten confused, running off the top right are two little hoses, one goes to what i guess is the vacuum actuator (i may be completely wrong here?), the other doesn't go anywhere, but in stock configuration I think went to the airbox. However, now it goes no where, and my gf's dad not knowing what it was put a screw in it... I forgot about it and carried on. When the engine is idling with the screw removed, I notice the revs drop if I hold my finger over the end of this hose, and pick up again when I remove my finger. So i've taken the screw out. I test ran having the screw in, having the screw out and the hose jamed into the pod filter, and screw out with hose just sitting there, and arn't sure if I actually noticed a different or was just looking for a placebo effect.

Can anyone explain what's going on? At high revs I used to hear the engine note change which I assumed was TVIS, now I don't even know if I'm hearing it anymore.

on my manifold those two little hoses on the top of your throttle body are looped around to connect on to each other. another ones, they aren't set up for anything.

there should only be two vacuum lines on your tvis butterflies, and they will both be on the bottom under the manifold. they shouldn't come up thru the manifold and connect to any other lines (although they may work like that, its not the normal setup)
i can get pics of my setup if need be.

if your TVIS is working you will hear a change in engine noise at approx 4500rpm, if they aren't working i assume you won't notice it :?

Well if you have no screw in there it will act like a vacuum leak, so leave it in.

The sensor in the pod filter is the air temp sensor, your ecu needs it to calculate the air density.

And as said, put your car in third or fourth, and rev it from 3k to about 5 or 6k.. you will hear a definite change in pitch when tvis kicks in.

Yeah i'm not hearing such a pronouced change at the moment.

So I should leave the screw in? Or shove it in under the pod ala it would be in the airbox? Pod doesn't make a nice seal then, though. Weird how it changes the revs.

Pictures would be good if you don't mind.

That's the thing about inheriting an engine that's had unknown things done to it, i'm wanna work out whats what etc.

that graphic above is how all the lines for the air-bypass valve should be hooked up - nothing to do with TVIS. if you aren't hearing the change in tone i would say your tvis isn't working or isn't hooked up properly.
as method said, it is most noticable in 2nd or 3rd.

this is how the tvis vacuum lines should be setup.

and this is how those two lines on top of my throttle body are...

hope this helps.
cheers

I must be blind, I can't see them.

I was thinking of putting the pod right onto the throttle body for a while thuogh

Oh, i see, one connected to the other.

With the screw in today I was hearing the tvis, though it kicked in quite late

Was it hard to get the air temp sensor in when its set up like that?

yeah its a pretty crappy pic but thats them joined onto each other.

my air temp sensor is actually on the manifold - next to the cold start injector - so pod filter doesn't effect it.

and don't put your pod filter directly onto the throttle body as in the pic above - it won't do any favours performance-wise. i only had it like that just so I could have a filter on while the engine was running and being tuned. better than not having one at all.
