Coby Extractors - advice..

Hey all,

I'm after a set of extractors for my Trueno, fella on trademe says he does coby ones for FWD 4age for $260 +$20 postage... here's one of his auctions (for RWD) http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 67.htm?p=4

I'm wondering if anyone's had any experience with these... or if I could get some for a better price somewhere in auckland? Also, any idea on the price of the gasket?

no idea if they are still there (as been about 6+ years) but the wildcat office in penrose used to be big supliers of coby products. if they are around,could be worth a phone call.

there where some stainless fwd extractors on TM at the same price 260, they looked pretty good, i cant find them now,

i wasn't very happy with the bends in my rwd coby mani, it had ripples in two runners, now there in my girls friends notch and i got the highrise big pipes you see in my avator,
also there is a dyno plot showing them loosing power compared to others, think its on garage dori or toymods,

Yeah Coby are pretty average...they make a difference over stock, but they're all tuned for high rpm and the welding on some of them is pretty rank.

get some blacktop extractors and modify them to fit.

There's a set of those on trademe atm, but I wasn't sure how much of an upgrade they'd be.

Had some on my fwd 4age. theyre junk. Rang up coby asking what rpm they were tuned to and iff they had been tested on a dyno.
Was told they were designed to be easy to fit and that they werent tuned or tested on a dyno.
I measured them up and they were tuned to somewhere around the 7,000rmp mark from memory.

Car definately went better when I refitted the factory manifold

Didn't they use to have a real bad reputation for cracking? Coby's in general, not just 4AGEs. This was a few years back now tho, so might have changed design.

yeh cobys are pretty poos. i cut mine up into little bits, and made some decent 4-2-1's out of what was left. huge difference

i got mine from a place in aklnd through one of my brothers suppliers, theyre blatantly coby i.e design/orange paint, but they only cost me $180 brand spanking new, deffinatley nicer than the ruff cast FWD manifold that had been fitted RWD and it goes somewhat better, that may be from the extensive exhaust leaks that it fixed tho...... fitted in my KE30, just had to heat one of the pipes with and tap it in a little as it fowled the steering idler but all gd so far.....

However if you wanted a set of extractors on the cheap, i've got a set of silvertop ones sitting in my garage which you can have for $50. The 20v extractors make a little more power over the cast 16v manifold, the internet tells me. They dont bolt straight up, you have to notch out two of the holes iirc.

Well this is what i'm wondering, i've been offered a non coby set for $250 which I don't mind paying for unless they aren't going to be better then the blacktop ones mod'd that are for sale...

Eitherway I still have to get my o2 sensor mounted somehow, and I heard the blacktop ones sometimes don't clear the starter motor when its infront?

Agreed. Ones I had were junk, never even installed them. The runners were different lengths and I sent it to an engineering friend to get the warp out of the flange and clean up the ports and a half arse match. Not just the design was bad but the engineering was awful on my ones as well.

Just be careful... there seems to be parties that will both say yes and no to this. Blacktop extractors with bigport starter motor did not work for me at all, large problem with clearance. Many say try the smallport starter motor but even if it is much smaller, would be still very close to the headers and can lead to issues with heat. Best solution is to swap bellhousings or gearbox so you have the starter on the intake side, if you are willing to go that far.

The main thing is to not take advice on this topic as gospel. Found this out through my own experience and have photos to prove it.
