JZA80 Diff differences

Postby matt dunn » Wed Sep 12, 2007 11:33 am

Are there differences between the different models of JZA80 Supra diffs?

Turbo, non-Turbo, auto and manual?

Axels and bits and pieces too.

Looking and changing the rear end in the 2JZGTE powered AE101 corolla,
but need to get a decent ratio and make sure we get the strongest diff
and axel setup if there are differences.

http://trdparts.jp/english/parts_lsd_mechanical.html

TRD site lists the same centre for all jza80 diffs, just need different shafts and bearings to make them fit.
epc does list different centres, but that makes sense if you need to change shafts.
from the epc it looks like theres 3 ratios

4.08 non turbo manual
3.769 auto n/a and turbo
3.266 6sp turbo

havnt looked in depth enough to say for sure that those ratios wern't shared around models though.

so going by the TRD lsd fits all jza80s you should be able to swap ratios between different jza80 diffs.
unless the TRD diff has provision for say different bolt patterns of the crown wheels. but i doubt it

My PLAN with my RX7 is convert the diff to the likes of a cressida/chaser or similar IRS diff, and make a mounting cradle type set up to mount it into the car. That way I can use any of the hilux/hiace ratios in my RX7 as the likes of a 5.1 or 5.3 are VERY appealing for the taupo short tracks.

I no alot of people go from the 3.2 to the 3.7 Auto diff for a track and drag application.I believe the big diff in the 6-speed crown wheel are actually 7.5 inch. For a track application I think the TRD route is the way to go but again it is down to how much you want to spend.Though the factory Torsen diffs will do the job.

So they went from g series 8 inch in the ma70 etc back down to a f size diff when the car has more power and a bigger gearbox? sounds very un-toyota all accounts on the supra forum say its bigger than a g

We had a non turbo JZA80 diff at work earlier in the week and it definitily looked 8 inch crown wheel to me. Basically #X80 series cressida style with different mounts on the head casting.

from what Ive gathered from the internet, and my old mans car ( hate the new diff codes) there is a 8" and a 8.7" diff in jza80's

First letter: Crown Wheel Size, A (8'' - 203mm), B (8.7'' - 221mm)
Digits: Differential Ratio, 01 (4.083:1), 02 (3.769:1), 03 (3.267:1)
last letter: A (Standard open differential), B (Torsen LSD)

JZA80 def has two different diffs!

NA auto/manual and Turbo AUTO have the same 8" diff as soarer/aristo and similar ratios ratios (3.9 or 4.1) - these are A0XX diff codes

turbo manual (6spd getrag) has the larger 8.7" diff and a unique ratio to suit the 6spd- 3.2 or so I think, and are B0XX diff codes

so tech specs as in ke70wag's post, but the diff was turbo+manual vs rest
