Exhaust systems, where are who?

Postby lucasthefallen » Sat Sep 15, 2007 10:25 am

looking at getting something made up for the fxgt in the near future, i want 2" either stainless or mild steel. would like to get some bends and straights and have a go at it myself first ( just because i'd like to learn more about it ). so first question is, where can i buy the piping i want, i've had a look on the net and rang a few places with no luck.

and failing that, where in auckland would be best to make me something up ( i dont want crush bends ).

also what mufflers/resonators would anyone recomend to use!?

i'd like to keep the noise down, but it doesnt have to be silent.

cheers

Has your work or someone you know got an account at Steel and Tube? they sell piping there..
I did a 3" system on my evo 4 and it cost less than $90
flexi's you can get from United Flexi in penrose for alot cheaper than at pitstop etc.

Youll have to buy a whole length from them though.
With the mild steel there are two different thicknesses, the thicker one is aluminised , but probably twice as heavy.

When I did my fxgt I just used two mandrel 'u bends' (one to go around the fuel tank, and one to go over the suspension arm), and some straight pipe.

But why 2" isnt the standard size 2"? id go for 2 1/4", then fit a straight through muffler (not an N1 style) at the back and a resonator in the middle

the extractors i brought are 4-2-1, and the 1 section is 2" so i assumed this was the way to go.
is 2 1/4 the way to go, do you think? do you mean you used a couple of 90 degree bends? where abouts did you get your piping from?

Nah 180 degree 'u' bends. Cut one in half and welded it together to go around the gas tank, chopped the other into little bits to go over the suspension arm.

The place I went to only had 2 1/2" mandrel bends so went 2 1/2" from the resonator back (which is too big imho). Just used a short bit of 2 1/4" that I had laying around from the manifold to the resonator.

2 1/4" seems to be the recomended size, maybe go 2 1/4" from the resonator back. 2 1/2" is just too hard to get quiet with those cars

ok then, so what im thinking is

4-2-1 extractors which is 2" and has flexi join
then into a resonator ( a long-ish one )
then 2 1/4 piping all the way to the muffler

any particular brands i should be looking for to use for the muffler etc.?

just a word, the set up on my girls notch is quite noisy even with...

38mm 4>1 mani
2 1/4 high alloy content steel,
2 middle sized coby reso's
press bent over diff
oval straight through muffler with 2 1/4 tip
the buzzing form a small port at idle is sweat but when you stomp on it, at 4k rpm it gets really noisy, and i dont have room to fit another reso in so im thinking of replacing the first reso with another straight through oval muffler, just to get rid of the tinny 4k rpm sound
