a ke20 question

Postby Matty104 » Tue Sep 18, 2007 10:20 pm

ive got a ke20, and the questions im keen to get answered are

considering that its dereg, i was wanting to put a 4k into it, but having a quick glance over there was a tag in the engine bay that said 3k, (guessing thats whats ment to be in it) so back to the question, if i was to put a 4k into it would i have to do anything special when it goes to get re reged? of will they just register it saying it has that engine?

and what about a 4age into it, just a thought is it quite hard to do , i mean having to get speedos and all that done?

also althought its been covered i cant get a strait answer, when getting re reged (or re vinnd or what ever its calld ) does it just go through a complience check over and if all is well it will be road legal again?

cheers

I think if you put in a 4K or even a 5K no-one would know the difference.
4age would be way more work and cost unless you can find a complete conversion for your 20.

Depends if whoever is doing the work bothers to check engine numbers or not.....

If the car is running atm, I'd get it on the road as it is, then do the engine swap...

yea i didnt really think they would notic as there isnt much difference between the motors is there, its a rolling body at the moment, engine won't be coming into the picture till next year but thought id find out wot needs to be done before i go and restore it and find out it was a waste of time

could it be defined by the fact that it wont be 25% more powereful than the standard motor therfore it won't need a cert, or is it more than 25% powerful?

once its been through a compliance check they will issue you a warrant and an MR2A, which will enable you to register the car. i believe theres also an additional charge for the new number plates.

i cant say for sure on re-vinning but when it comes to imports the engine number is checked and recorded, so chances are you will be pulled up on it if the car doesnt have the 3k its supposed to have.

Technically it's 20% but that's not really for engine swaps, that's more of a guideline for engine mods

The one that'd require you to get a cert if it was noticed would be the capacity rules

I would say you'd be pretty safe with changing to a 4k. if any one picked you up on it, it would be good as we'd know not to go to that guy for a re vin

so what do they actually do , ?, check it , then stamp a new number into the fire wall or what?, is there any other legal way i can get around it, like by buying the reg plates etc from another 20 or is that not possible?

Using plates from another vehicle is very very illegal. Just put heaps of grease/dirt over the engine number if you're worried about it.
All they'll do is give it a good going over then stick a VIN plate on the firewall.

yea i assumed it was , but no harm in checking, yea it wont be for a while yet anyway as the panelling is only just underway, but just wanted to make sure geting re reged ws possible before starting, can a 4k bolt strait into 3k mounts?

i think il just take my chances with the 4k , and if it got caught out id look 4 a 3k just to get the complience if it came to that , i assume youve got something like 28 days to fix stuff like a normal warrent?

Grind the numbers of where it says "4K.............." on the engine block an no1 will know the difference... The engines all look the same... but seriously y would u wana stick with the old slow motor when there are so so so many options you can do... (funds do take alot of the decision making in the long run tho)

Post some pics up of your KE20 (mate of mine is striping a KE20 so he may have some parts of interest)
