3SGTE starter motors

Postby Boosted_162 » Sat Sep 22, 2007 9:20 pm

Ok, well i have just got myself a new MR2 beast. Once you have started it you can hear the starter winding down. Ive been told this is because the starter is starting to die? It has no problems starting, but as its my daily i dont wanna get stuck anywhere if it breaks.

Well anyway, i have multiple gen 2 starters (car is a gen III MR2, gen 3 3SGTE), now are they the same thing? Is it possible to recondition the gen 3 starter and use it again? (but use a gen 2 while its getting done). Obviously a reliable starter is something i want, not sure on the condition of any of the ones ive got.

Are you sure it's the starter making the noise, and not something like the Steering pump winding down just after you start the engine?

You'll always be able to hear a starter 'wind down' when it is released from the ring gear.

Im not actually sure, i can hear the noise and i was told by the last owner it was the starter. Would it appear not to be on its way out?

i cant hear the starter motor wind down on my 96 GT-S,

but the power steering pump is noisy as hell. (there is plenty of fluid in the tank.)

it looks like Andrews old MR2 ?

cool last time i saw that car it was mint... esp for the kms he had done..
and the odd thing he was returning it to stock... ( i missed out on a ARC induction box & piping... he wanted to swap for stock items.)

as for the starter noise, listen for the st time last night,
and it does make a wiring noise after starting, im just asuming that was normal as that is how it has been since i brought it.

Yeah the car is incredibly tidy. I was a bit skeptical on how many k's it had done, but as soon as i saw it i was sold 8O. Its due for an oil change, and the oil is still cleanish! (and still runs on synthetic oil)

It has no problems starting at the moment anyway, so ill leave it for now. Just make sure i leave a spare starter and socket set in the boot

Just stumbled upon this thread on my 3-monthly trawl of TS :)

The noise definitely comes from the starter motor (its particularly loud) and is not the PS pump. The earlier Gen II starters are the same; I've compared them side by side. The other starter I gave you is from a Gen II 3S-GTE which worked without problems or noise. It should be about 130,000kms old, but might be worth getting recon'd.

The starter in the car has been making that noise since the start of the year and hasn't seemed to get worse. I never had any trouble starting it. I think you'll find its because the bearings are worn, since it seems to make the noise no matter what position the starter is in.

Re the ARC airbox, I got sick of the considerable induction noise.
