Big brakes on hilux

Postby strainy » Tue Sep 25, 2007 10:04 pm

Hey wondering if anyone out there has put bigger brakes on a 88 2wd hilux with ifs? Any tips and parts used would be much appreciated.

I'll ask it...

If your current brakes can lock the wheels, why bother putting bigger brakes on it?

Put the cash into better tyres.

exactly, the braking limits of most road cars are the tyres.

There is a good thread about upgrading brakes in the Tech FAQ forum... basically it comes down to if you think the brakes are good, you tend to hit your foot on them harder(as you trust them to work more), but unless you have some good sticky tyres, they're only there for looks.

Not quiet, as with smaller brakes, they have less surface are, the force is not a problem it is how much heat they can take. Smaller rotors will overheat faster and pads will stop working (fade), hence the upgrade.

I agree that in a once-off "lock her all up, chief" emergency stop, braking distance is going to come down to the tyres.

But I also think that it CAN be worth upgrading the rotors/calipers, but only if the originals are actually too small - and especially if theres something bolt on/cheapish enough, then why not?

If the hilux is used as a 2 door sports car more than a ute, or its a tow vehicle, or you go down the piha hill every weekend, then the standard brakes probably arn't up to the task - larger swept area plus greater heat dissapation will improve things alot, especially if the pads are also upgraded.

But on the other hand, if you're not running out of brakes at the moment, then bigger brakes are only going to add unsprung mass and make it handle worse than it already does 8)

I want to put bigger brakes in as i am putting a larger engine in which is more powerful and also heavier than the factory 3y and will be used for towing and general use as a ute.
