Id say it will eventually be a toyota chasis, as autoblog reports in a different post about lexus developing a small rear wheel drive to compete with the 1 series beemer.
So by deduction i'd say this gives toyota a chasis to use for the new ae86, and if it has to have a subie engine i can live with it, as long as it has a different "skin" from the subie, ie toyota aygo, puegot 107 etc.
Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

i just cant imagine that distinctive boxer rumble coming out of an '86 to be honest, not that toyota cares what i think.

also, 1.5 ftl.

then again, i read an article about the AE86 festival at okayama on that same site, and the writer was talking about people using "some kind of dual or quad carb setup" with a link to a picture of an AE86 with quad throttles.

Thats a very DOHC looking SOHC.

"You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time".

No matter what they build people are gonna bitch because it isn't an AE86 and it doesn't have a $&#$% 4age in it.

You've hit the nail on the head right there.

What Toyota really needs to do, is re-commence production of the original AE86.

Brand new 1984-87 AE86's.

I would wet myself so bad.

Chance of that happening = ZERO.

They wouldn't meet safety or emissions standards.

And how many do you think toyota would be able to sell even if they could get them to market? New car buyers don't want 20yo cars. And the majority of drifters couldn't find the cash to buy a new AE86.

Dreams are free, my friend :)

I'd be interested to see how they could get it so light with all the safety standard requirements in place these days!

Well, Toyota do own 20% of Subaru, and if raiding parts bins helps keep production costs down, can only be a good thing

A car like this will bring shame and dishonour to the AE86 name. Its horrible. I always thought that they should just bring out an anniversary model, something like a "Black Limited" with a 3sgte or 20V 4age. Old style body shape ( like they did with Mini ). That would be rad. It would also top up the parts pool. It will never happen though.

it doesnt need to be an AE86, and it doesnt need a 4AGE. it just needs to be something cool, not a chopped up legacy with some puss box 1.5 SOHC subaru shitter under the hood...

i cant belive any of u are taking this article seriously,

"Also the rear differential sourced from Subaru (from the Impreza 15S) has been cited as a weak link"

dude the R160 diffs used in WRX's are the same as the 1500 imprezas

"The 1.5L engine - named ‘EL15′ - is a DOHC flat-four powerplant"

subaru dont make anything called a EL15, i think they mean EJ15

why on earth would u put a gutless 1500 subaru engine in a "sports car"

it would be a ae85 if anything

subaru currently make a 121kw (140kw in japan) 2.0l in the legacys, much better match
