smallport wont go... no spark

ok story is, new leads, new plugs, new cap and rotor, plenty of fuel, using all smallport sensors loom and ecu etc. have swapped the ignitor, didnt make a difference.
everything was fine until i did a compression test on the old engine ( same dizzy etc ), now its just no go.

there was a bad oil leak from the dizzy o-ring, is it possible that the internal ring as leaked oil everywhere inside the dizzy stoping it from producing spark?

any ideas? are there any common problems with no spark on the smallports?

does anyone have any testing procedures and specs for checking the dizzy?

does anyone have a dizzy and/or coil that i can borrow to try?

any help will be greaty appreciated.

good earth on coil and igniter?

yea pretty sure the earth is good, checking resistance between coil housing > battery neg, ignitor housing > battery neg, dizzy housing > battery neg, all showed 0 resistance, so thats good earth right.

on the loom, like 4 mm before the plug for the dizzy, 2 of the wires have small openings in the insulation, looks as though they have been like that for a long time.... ?

avoid them at all costs, as they will sort your wallet out


Although this is a bit more complicated that working out why a 4k won't run so maybe if you need it running soon it could be worthwhile

How did you disable the spark when you cranked it to do the compression test?
or did you just remove the HT lead and not disable the low tension side.

If the spark has no where to go because you have pulled out the HT lead from the coil etc,
the spark can jump internally in the coil and cause a track in it,
which then makes the coil buggered.

My bet would be this is the case with yours.

i pulled the lead straight out of the coil to disbale the spark.

im going to check the resistances on the coil this evening, i check for 12v ealier and that was ok.

You pulled the lead out of the coil, but the coil itself will still have tried to make spark, unless you unplugged the 12v 2 pin plug to it.

Will still test fine with a multi meter, as the fault is not an open circuit or short circuit, It, an internal air gap that will take 12,000 volts to jump.

Yeah,

At a guess it only happens about 25% of the time,
so 75% of the time your safe,

but from what you describe it sounds like it.
