FWD Cars with 3S?

Postby AE86less » Sun Sep 30, 2007 1:18 pm

Since i am going to be getting my red AW roadworthy before the corolla i now have the time to do what i really want to do to it.

I want to put a 3S (probably non-turbo) into the corolla. Obviously the best way to find out about how well it will fit is to go and measure one, but i have a couple of questions:

1. I know that the ST185 (?) GT-R is FWD with a 3s but are there any other cars? Do currens have them?

2. I've only had a very brief search, but i know that there are a few versions of the 3s, where can i find some info on them?

3. Someone has to have done something similar to this before, even if it's into an AW, does anyone have any tips etc?

Plenty of FWD ones. Celica, Curren, Corona, Camry, Caldina etc etc

Why not use an SW20 one?

celica st183 would be a good start point.
maybe google fensport
they have done 3sgte into corollas
3sge would be preety much the same with slightly less packaing/plumbing issues.

That website is fantastic! Cheers much for the link *Favourited*

lol, I guess theres no reason not to use an SW engine. I figure it'll probably be easiest to find a manual gearbox from a MR2, Curren or Celica. Do they use the same one?

By my figuring, the easiest way to do it would be to try and find a crashed/derego'd car (must be manual) and strip it all out? That way i could just use all the fuel pump and radiator etc from the donor.

At the moment i'm thinking that i will (hopefully) be happy with the engine unmodified, which should keep costs down a little

EDIT: I'll look up fensport while i'm not meant to be doing my uni assignment :? Cheers.

use a 3rd gen engine, better starting point ans easier to find. most of the SV30/ST183/early SW20 engines have done 200+km and are nearing the end of their life.

You could talk to the bloke who built this very successful 3S powered rally car.

Get a FWD engine from an ST202 celica or curren.

Gen 2 3SGEs are a bit old and crusty now, beams engines are good but a bit harder to find etc.

FWD engines have some differences from the MR2 motors, it becomes a bit trickier trying to use an MR2 engine/gbox, may as well get the right one to start with and save yourself some issues.

Haha, i wish i had $14.5k to spend on a car!!

I was thinking about just using a gen 2 and swapping in something better at a later stage, but they always say "do it right the first time", don't they... You really are a beams whore  I saw your question on TM 8)

I supose i have to do my own research on this one, but what would a rearended ST202 go for at turners etc?

One of your better suggestions Warwick.
This car is a classic example of the benefits of buy vs build.
That car was a 45k spend when first built. Has undergone 1000's of $$$$ of development since. Can now be bought for 14k!!!

AE86less, Gen 3 3SGE's are pretty cheap these days. There's really nothing to be gained from using old tired gear.

Fitting the 3S into FWD Corolla is not a particularly difficult job but there some small traps so do your home work first. Send me a pm if you want any tips.

you'd be better off finding a car that has minor frontal damage as a car that has good front end panel will fetch the highest price at auction.

Something that has had a nose to tail, or a good hit on the LF corner (gearbox side) would be your best bet

This is still some time away (gotta get the aw to daily drivable standards and sell the other one first). It's a shame you're so far away, i'll definately get in touch with you before i start going ahead with this.

you'll normally pay around $850++ for a 3rd gen ST202/206 motor with ecu and loom

Look hard - private sale got me a 1995 gen3 3sge powered ST206 Curren for $400 for the whole car.... It had been spun through some trees - sides bashed, 1 wheel ripped off. Look carefully at the where the engine mounts bolt to the block. A bigger crash can crack the block in this area.

I got it real cheap (I'm good at that). But for $850 you can recover a fair amount of $ by selling bits off.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

About what you would pay for a lightly damaged curren/celica at Turners.
There was a guy on trademe that had a black ST202 with minor frontal a few weeks ago, didn't want much for it

approx $800 + buyers fee at a guess, less if it had no salvageable panels/lights
