Seriously, who cares what engine it's gonna come with?

Anyone who could afford to buy one (ie. none of the people that whinge that they should make them exactly like an AE86 again) could also afford to get a better engine.

An altezza engine+box would be a cost effective choice to give the car a bit more zing, but I would say that. :P

the new "AE86" should get a new "4AGE"
ie a small capacity high revving DOHC L4, with all the valves variable timing and multiple throttle bodies they can fit on it.

it should weigh less than 1 tonne too, or at least have all the unneccesary safety and comfort sh!t easy too remove (and no #@%$ing sound deadening)

Um, most of the safety features that weigh enough to make any difference at all would be structural reinforcements etc. that modern cars have. You can hardly go hacking these off. You're not gonna get a car that looks, sounds and rusts like an AE86, if you want that just go buy one, you'll get it cheaper than a new one of these. Besides, it'd be 10 years before a lot of people who bitch about how it's not an AE86 would be able to afford one second hand anyway.

I like it... and I don't see the problem with a 1.5L engine no matter where it has come from.

You guys that are bitching about it need to take a light weight car with a small engine for a spin to appreciate how close to a go-cart feel you can get. Go test drive a yaris/echo/vitz RS, if you are in chch, there is a little supercharged yaris, it is a stonkingly fast machine.

Seriously WTF has this got to do with an AE86? it's nothing like one and isn't supposed to be one!!
Is everyone obsessed with AE86's? Why? There aren't exactly a super car, Why do people find them so special, is it because of a ghey Japanese cartoon?

what i'm trying to say is. the ae86 and 4age are gone and never coming back. if toyota are coming up with a car to succeed it i want it to be a ultra light 4 cyl. hell an FR version of the ZZW30 MR2 would do quite well (though i prefer a mid engined car anyday).
but this subaru sucks imo.

it has to do with hachis in peoples minds (including my own) because of a couple of things -

A) its a lightweight, FR "sports car" - and it would be the first toyota has made since the '86 ended production
B) the internet rumor mill has been churning out the spiritual sucessor to the '86 story for a while now
C) when you view the world through panda colored glasses, everything has to do with hachis
D) and sometimes, 2+2 = carrots.

as for finding them special, i think you'll find the culture around the car inspiried the cartoon, rather than the other way around. for sure theres plenty of bandwagon types out there too, just like theres alot more guys driving WRX's with STi fog light covers than there are guys who have always been into rallying their genuine STi's. no they arent a super car, but they were until recently a cheap, reasonably well balanced RWD car that was (and is) a whole lot of fun to drive. i always get fellow hachi owners coming up out of the blue to say hello and have a chat when they see me get out of mine, and i think thats pretty awesome personally.

i dont think you should be down on people who are passionate about their passion... if you see what i mean.

The yanks had a burst of nostalgia driven models recently. Of particular interest to me is the Dodge Charger and next year the Dodge Challenger, GM with the Camaro, Ford with the Mustang redesign etc..

LOL funny and true

its not some cartoon that made me buy a 86 its driving it round corners that made me do it, my cuz had one and it felt so cool to drive so i had to get one, ae86 where popular way before the cartoon came out. they have such a big following in japan that you'll see more ae86's then any other old school car on the roads. its cheaper to own a new car in japan but they still persist and keep the hatch,

i know guys who drove STI's and bmw's but sold them to get a hatch. i my self drove a 328i for a while but it never gave me such a big grin as the ae86 does,
