Cams/compression ratio.... beams 3SGE engines.

When I dynoed my MR2, it was running fairly rich up top end, and leaning it out a little would definitely make some more power.

For my carina engine, I've bought a 'camcon' which is basically similar in function to an SAFC, but you can + or - the cam angle in 500rpm increments too. (I wont be worrying about any of this until I've got the engine up and running/trouble shooted/etc with standard ECU first....)

I figure that adjusting the cam angle wont be *hugely* useful with standard cams etc, the ECU should do a pretty good job of sorting that out already.
But I figure now that I've got a degree of control over it, perhaps it would be worthwhile getting a more aggressive cam profile, which is where being able to adjust it would be useful?

I'll be using the Altezza 6 speed box, which has fairly close ratios, I want my powerband to be from about ~5500-6000rpm onwards, I dont mind losing a little bottom end power to gain some up top.
(still stuck with standard 7400 rev cut though.... damn)

However I'm wondering, would it be worthwhile going for a different cam profile to standard, when running standard ~11:1 compression?
Or is a new cam profile only worthwhile once you've got more compression to go with it?

I've never been a fan of piggy back units TBH, seems like throwing a spanner into the works.
I'm willing to try this out, but going to a full stand alone will be the way to go if it doesnt work too well. My question about compression ratio still stands though!

Mild cam changes will be fine with 11:1.

Anything with big overlap will need a higher CR to make it work.

I would be looking at cams that work from 4600-4800 RPM onwards personaly.

Hey, will be keen to know how the piggy back goes, or if you have to go to the full aftermarket ecu.. keep us all informed. I am still planning on running the factory ecu on my upcoming project so keen to hear first hand about how things react to the piggy back
