The 'Manu' Button - What does it do?

I've had 2 Toyota's.

1988 Corona
1986 Supra

They've both got a manu button, i've always wondered what it does...?

It stands for Manual that i'm aware of, but yea tell me!

If both of them were auto it's probably to lock up the TC so that it changes gear later and you can make use of more of the revs...

My 86 MR2 has one, i think it means that when you shift up through low and 2nd it will stick in those gears instead of adjusting the revs.

The Power button is what lets the engine go up to the red.

Manual mode for auto transmission,


if your cruising at 50k, and the auto is in 3rd or higher and you plant to about 3/4 throttle, it should not drop down a gear,

so you can use a lot of throttle without using a lot of revs.

what ^he^ said - its just like the 'hold' button in a nissan - holds whatever gear the shifter is in, and probably locks the torque converter up in some cars

What sort of Nissans? The hold button in my Skyline is basically a 'gentle' mode. I.e. it changes gears way sooner and smoother (no matter how much you plant it) and doesn't drop below second gear, ever.

With power switched on it revs higher, changes gears sharper and just goes like a rocket generally. ;)

It is the same as the snow button on NZ new cars.
If you press MANU and put the car in L2 it will take off from a standstill in 2nd gear to stop wheelspin in slippery conditions.
Also good for burnouts...

These descriptions are cracking me up. The MANU/HOLD button is to force the car to use whatever gear the selector is in. So if you're doing 50k's up a hill, hit "hold/manu" with the selector in 3rd and plant the boot, it should hold 3rd gear instead of grabbing second. So it "Hold"s the gear selected or gives you true "manu"al gear control - makes sense huh :)

However I'd say most cars have a failsafe. So if you've got the MANU/HOLD button in and the selector is in overdrive, and you pull up to some lights, it wont keep holding 4th to pull away from stopped or the trans wouldnt last too long, i's not got anything to do with any kinda snow/grip control, its just so you dont screw the trans for using the button when you shouldnt.

my laurel will try and take off from the lights in 4th if the hold button is on, i get a bit lazy driving that thing

i just tried it on the way back from dinner, it still down shifts if i plant foot, no matter if you cruising at 50 or leave it in 2 or every thing in between. and if you 3/4 throttle of course its gona stay in the same gear, so im not quite sure about the manu button anymore maybe it doesn't do anything part from filling a hole in the center console,

I think i've got it....

On the way home from school yesterday, I droped it from 'D' into 'L2' and it went straight from 4th (the gear I was in) to 2nd...then i pushed the manu button and tried it again, this time it went from 4th to 3rd for a brief second then into 2....

It just does it so it's not so hard on the gearbox i think.
