Questions about ecu mounting (heat and orientation)

Postby flygt4 » Tue Oct 09, 2007 8:03 pm

I am making a cradle/box to hold my link firmly in position, as currently it lies loose behind the dash and i used to get the occasional random stall from loose wires.
so far i have made a cardboard template which fits perfectly snug and it doesnt move about at all anymore. i am thinking i'm going to make the final version out of thin sheetmetal or something along those lines, and possibly mount it low to the glovebox for ease of access.

i have a couple of dumbass questions but it always pays to check.

Do ECU's create much heat while running? should i avoid enclosing it completely, should i cut vents into the cradle or will it not be an issue?

Does the orienation of the ECU affect its running in any way? is there an upside down for these? the coms port is on the "bottom" of the ECU and i would like to mount it so it is easily accessible for the person tuning it, ie upside down.

i dont think a box would be a problem.
in the link manual it suggests a sealed box for marine use so i cant see it overheating

Heat is not an issue, they create a little bit but not enough to fry themselves.

And any mounting position will do too, they do not have a top or a bottom.

As stated the Link is fine in boxes. I mount mine in sealed tupperware containers incased in foam. It gives a form of vibration isolation, however I doubt you'll need that in a road car. I also like to mount the link on the side or with the wires / vacume line on the bottom. This stops water running down the wires and straight into the link. Again you probably won't have an issue with this, just make sure the gromets on your firewall are tight.
The answer is Helmholtz!

my template measurements were pretty exact, like 171mmx106mmx35mm  im trying get it so it sits perfectly inside it.
ive basically mocked up a box with an opening at one end for the loom, an opening at the other for the coms, and a flat flange i can easily screw into a flat surface, probly the glovebox or side of centre console.
i think i may have peaked too early as my template was a scarily perfect fit  i wont ever be able to get it that close again.

a quick paint sketch due to lack of cad program

as long as you can get the connection onto the tuning port it will be fine.

i leave my usb wire in the link all the time, and ran it under the center console, then out just in front of the passenger seat, so the tuner could access it easily and quickly, and it's easily hidden

Fly, i might be able to get a box to that size ya never know these boxes are designed for very simlar situations.

Also enable a sealable secure wire connection so you could make it water tiight but still have a cable in and or out where ever for USB conections etc.
