Roll cages.... road leagal race car Q's......

Post by 3T-Rona »

lookin for some one who has a road reg'd race car that has a full cage and stuff just to get a general idea as to the effort involved in keeping it on the road.
Building a fairly basic drag car, decent motor, decent diff etc
and originally planned on chucking in a half cage, but since i want the cage more for body strength than roll over safety im thinking a full cage will be a whole lot better in the long run. Other than the actual cage costs any ideas on what cost/effort will be involved to keep it on the road.
obviously i need 2 join a motorsport club and hold a motorsport license with 3 annual events in a log book, is it a major hassle?
cheers

If its specifically for a drag car, does it not need to be built to different design requirements? and have a different inspection process as its under NZDRA as opposed to MSNZ?

If you're wanting to do MSNZ stuff, its not much of a hassle if you're interested in turning up to those sanctioned events and participating.

im yet to talk to a cage builder about the design.
hoping it will be around 10, theres a blue KE35 (GTUWET????) with a reasonably standard 1uzfe snorting NOS doing l8 10's, mine will be similar weight wise and engine wise with maybe a little more motivation....
What will i need exactly when i go to certify/Reg/wof and i have a full cage, fixed back seats an harnesses?

The MSNZ side of things was easier than the Certification for the other bits I had done to the car (maybe because I'd paid more attention to the cage and bits).

This might be a no-brainer but:
To have the a full cage, you must have (raceseats?) and harnesses.

Get the cage done by someone with a good name, flick MSNZ the photos and cage design, some paperwork and a little $$ and its almost legal (you get back a log book and authority card) Then get someone / scruitneer from your car club to come and inspect everything after its all painted / padded ... you now become road legal.

Then its get all the other bits done, arrange for a cert person, take the car to be inspected, fill out some brief paperwork (they do heaps more than you do), flick $400 - $500 their way, afew days later the plate comes and everythings hunky dory.

The really interesting part is convncing the cert person what is and what isnt covered by the authority card.. Talk to the helpful fellas(fellets) at MSNZ first...

Just a quick reply ... if you have NOS system fitted, you won't be going in any MSNZ events.
