ae92 brakes

Postby Tuscan » Sat Nov 03, 2007 11:23 am

My girlfriend is looking to buy a fairly inexpensive Corolla. We test-drove a NZ new ae92 liftback which was in near-perfect condition but decided against buying because we weren't happy with the brakes. She does a lot of Auckland motorway driving so brakes are kinda important 8O

The pedal felt really dead and you had to give them a decent push in order to stop the car. It almost felt like they weren't power assisted (it had front discs so I'm sure they were).

I have owned and ae92 FXGT and Trueno and, while I'm aware that these both had 4 wheel discs, the brakes on those were soooo much better than the car we test drove.

She probably doesn't want to buy either a FXGT or Trueno as she isn't really interested in performance and wouldn't be keen to pay the ridiculous insurance premiums they seem to charge for those cars.

So, finally, my question is: can anyone tell me if the brakes are the same on all the non-FXGT/Levin/Trueno ae92 Corollas?? I thought maybe it might just be NZ new ones since it seems they came out with pretty budget specs in all other areas.

I presume the next model came with better brakes so if all ae92s aren't going to be much good then we might have to look at the newer, and more expensive, cars.

Apologies for the long post! Any help appreciated :)

Could just be crappy pads in it. I cant remember a single AE9x corolla I've driven that didn't have decent brakes in it.

And if the booster wasn't hooked up then you'd know about it, the pedal would barely move ;)

Yeah, I asked the chick selling it about them and she siad they'd always been like that. She had it for 6 years and had had pads and stuff replaced.

I don't know, maybe I'm expecting too much. But they felt like the brakes on my brother's 1983 Ford Laser... :(

it is possible to drive a "performance" vehicle in a nanaish way.
Just get the fxgt, much better car and she can drive it as slow as she likes.

insurance isnt bad for the fxgt, just ring around.

Best insurance I could find for an under-25 was bout $800 a year 8O

...for a $3500 car.

Ended up being worth it though when someone pinched it... :x

insurance is generally cheaper for girls, worth keeping in mind.

sounds like a booster problem to me
