AE101 GTZ Fuel consuption

Postby 20v FX-GT » Mon Nov 05, 2007 10:34 am

Hi All,

My first post on Toyspeed in about 2 years!

My GF has a AE101 GTZ with a couple of minor mods - pod filter, big exhaust and headers. It seems to get through petrol like its going out of fashion. She doesn't know any different but compared to my AE111 20v its a huge difference. The most we can get out of a tank is 400km on the open road (using 95/98 by the way). In comparision my 20v can get 600+ on the same roads same driver, same speed, etc.

I've changed the oil and plugs. Is there anything in particular on a 4agze that causes it to use a lot of fuel or is it just the nature of the beast?

Cheers

Matt

The best fuel economy I've managed out of the 4AGZE MR2 is 11km/l. Typically it is 9-10km/l though, just seems to be a thirsty car.

Have a go at checking the codes and see if that shows up anything.

Doesnt the knock sensor throw the timing out and all that - would that use more fuel?

How do I check the codes? Do I need a diagnistic tool or is there a way of making lights flash on the dash?

does the car heat up to normal operating temp?

i had a similar issue with my ae92 gtz as it didnt quite get up to operating temperature, so used to run almost constantly on cold start.. with super poor fuel economy. Replaced thermostat (and radiator, as it was in a bad way) and that fixed it.

Hey Andrew,

Long time no hear, how's things?

Yes, it heats up normally - water temp sits at about half way on the guage.

My old FX with 4agze conversion would get 500km from a tank around town, and over 600km on the open road.

Yeah - I got about 500kms to a tank in my old AE101 GTZ, pretty much the same as my 20v Marino

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

How many litres did it take when you filled it?

My MR2 reads empty at 300k, but then barely takes 30 litres.

On the open road I can get up to just on 12km/L, strictly around town drops to around 10km/L or maybe a bit lower.

Also check that the tyre pressures are correct.
