Aw11 dash warning lights going.

Postby ollieboy » Mon Nov 12, 2007 2:54 pm

I haven't been driving my mr2 for a while because I was fixing bits and pieces on it. When I started it today the cooling fan, cat converter and charge lights won't go off. I don't think I have driven it since I replaced the cambelt and waterpump so I probably forgot to do something after that which caused this but I'm not sure.

Do I have to reset anything to get the lights to go off? Or is the problem probably a bit worse than that?

Cheers
Ollie

most likely fried alternator. If so battery will not last very long.

Would that cause the cooling fan and cat light to come on too?

Ahh, it appears you are right- I went and tested the battery with multimeter and it stayed at the same on and off.

Thats gutting.

Oh I see, then you should look into loose grounds, as the cooling fan circuit is separate from lights. The fan comes on when the thermoswitch opens (thus losing connection with ground)

Oh, yeah I was meaning cooling fan light. Like this:Image

Is there a fuse for the alternator that I can check? Or would it just be a dead alternator?

There is a fuse for alternator, in different cars it has called different, eg ALT.
Look for 7.5A-15A fuse in the engine bay fusebox.

Yeah? I guess its a kind of odd light now I think about it- I've never seen one before I got the AW.

I found a bown fuse in the engine compartment and changed it, it didn't make a difference so thats quite annoying.

I'm kind of thinking it must be a loose connection- it wouldn't just stop working after not being used would it?

Dont discount the fact that the alt could be stuffed.

Unplug the 3 pin plug at the alt and test the 3 pins,

With the key on and it unplugged you should get 12V at all the pins with a multimeter,
or
power at two with a test light and a faint glow on the other.
