cheap trademe turbos??

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Tue Nov 27, 2007 9:28 pm

These cheap turbos on trademe - some people say you get what you pay for, others swear by them.
But what I wana know is; by running one of these cheap turbos, am I running the risk of damaging the engine itself should one of the turbos let go? or is it just a matter of replacing it with another turbo and away you go? Generally do these things fly to pieces or just "quietly crap out"?

Go with the ones that Barry sells. There are a poo load of people here that are using them now and they are proven to make the numbers on the dyno too.
Apparently they're pretty cheap and easy to rebuild as well.

even those still fail though.
they are all prone to it, some are just less likely to than others.

if you're smart and hunt around you can sometimes actually get brand new factory turbos for ~1k. i got my BB STI turbo for $1100.

Bring them in from the states... you can get good brands for good prices.

I paid around 1.5K for a genuine Garrett GT3076R about 4 months ago.

The last one is Bazda. Him, I'd trust :)
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

From what ive heard usually the intake compressor comes loose due to not being loctited in or the shaft snaps

Your intercooler usually.....catches all the mess

Two of my skyline mates have the really cheap nasty ones on there car, one after 3months smoked like crazy, oil just pouring into the exaust, and of course he got lazy on topping it up and ended up spinning a big end. the other one however is still going strong after 6months pushing 13-18psi on a rb25 with no smoke or anything, it just seems to be the luck of the draw

Time will tell tho...just up to you if you want to spend $500 every 6-12months or buy something that will give years of reliable motoring

i got barry to get mine, its actually my turbo in that picture, was running at 20psi for ages, now i've been running it at 25psi for a while, still no shaft play, no smoking (except black from poo loads of fuel), it's all about making sure you give it good oil, right restricter, and have a really good return.

had it for 1.5-2yrs now as well
