Avgas in Auckland?

Postby Maxwedge » Thu Nov 29, 2007 9:19 am

Where can I easily purchase Avgas in Auckland? Years ago I pulled up in my rally escort behind two Cessnas at North Shore Aerodrome fuelled up and paid the lady behind the counter and was on my way- that was 20 years ago!!
I heard its difficult now without a pilots licence, is that true?
A few garages sell race gas but not avgas, any ideas or leads

Racegas is expired avgas.

Unless you're meaning jungle juice like race supply places sell (eg: 120 unleaded etc), which (random information) can't be used in any motorsport nz events. Dunno about drags etc.

Just rock up to Ardmore flying school with a proper fuel can, and say "I want x amount of your AVGAS LL100 goodness" and they'll take you down to the apron and fuel it up.

Or you can wait for people to preflight planes and do fuel drains, if you stick around you might collect enough for a couple of litres :D

Not easily. Damn bean counters monitor the usage of our FOL (Fuels oils and lubricants) stores a bit more strictly now.

Most of our planes run on AVTUR anyway (good for Diesel vehicles).
We do get the occasional Airtrainer come in, but the refueller section looks after them and is fenced off.
There is a small plane club on Base as well, but I wouldn't know how to get gas from them either.

I've heard the BP at Kumeu has it as Bredon has said.
You can't put it straight into a car, it has to go in a container.

Back when I was in the AF a supply was kept for 104 flight, my mate, short on cash swiped some for his car, we were on a mission to Ohakea for a piss up, and got caught. Ardmore military prison, he was unlucky as Navy were doing guard duty

C16 and the like can't be used in MSNZ events? I thought they were trying to phase out avgas, not the other alternatives?

You can use in MotorSport NZ permitted events
Diesel
91
95
98
in other words all pump gas
Av/Race leaded 100 octane

E10 and E85 are currently under testing.

But that's it.

Rally NZ (runs to FIA regs, not NZ regs) will run the Elf control fuel.

Basically, you can only run pump or av, because otherwise anyone with money can simply buy $10/litre jungle juice and have an advantage over everyone else who can't afford to pay silly petrol prices. It's just a way to keep the playing field a bit more level.

What was all the fuss about a few months back about MSNZ phasing out avgas then? I thought they were trying to be all enviromental. Surely Supply & Demand would mean that if MSNZ mandated C16 for all tier 1 & 2 events the price of it would drop a fair bit. & pump gas for the rest?

The fuss was people not reading.

The Exec decided that Av was being phased out for Tier 1 race championship classes where possible (eg: Porsche GT3, Mini, Production Racing, TRS). The NZV8's and Formula Fords can't deal with pump gas in their current configurations though.

Motorsport is a tiny fraction of a drop in the bucket. Even if everything went to mandatory jungle juice, then it wouldn't be anything like pump gas prices.

Plus, can you imagine the logistics of trying to institute mandatory fuel that wasn't sold at a forecourt, or in barrels (av). It'd be a bloody nightmare. You can't transport it, you can store bugger all of it etc. So imagine trying to cart gas around the country to every race, rally, hillclimb etc etc. Owies.
