problems with w57 speedo output

Postby JamesM » Thu Nov 29, 2007 3:03 pm

Ok so im just about to go get a wof and i was driving along and my speedo stopped working.. so i took the gaguge cluster out to check whether the cable is turning.. and as far as i can see it is not. and the cable hasnt come out of the gearbox.. is there something in the gearbox that might have fallen out of place?...

the speedo drive that comes out of the gearbox does not turn..

I took my speedo drive out last night.. and everything is defiantly workin.. but the worm gear and the gear on the speedo drive is not touching…. So thinking that it must be hardout worn… cause the worm gear is steel and the speedo drive is nylon… but they look ok.. any ideas?

I'd say that your speedo cable is broken... It seems unlikely that the gears would have worn out, and you'd be able to turn the end of the speedo drive easily if it wasnt meshing to the gearbox gears...
And it should be fairly obvious if the teeth were mega worn out, so that they werent meshing.

I've got W57 speedo drive and speedo cable here if you want to try and eliminate one or the other as a variable.

cable isnt broken, i took cable out and the speedo drive defianlty isnt turning.. (so it has to be between the worm gear and the speedo drive output.) thanks it would be great if i could borrow ur speedo drive to test it out. can you pm me ur mobile and possible time i can come pic up? or u could drop around to my place on saturday arvo? its not that uncommon for the speedo drive unit to crap out for one reason or another.

well ive worked out that the worm gear has actually moved due to its locating pin shearing off... what a bitch.

turned out that the worm gear is held in place by a locating spring pin. this had just popped off and so the worm gear had slid along.. easy fix.
thanks roman for the offer.
