Detomaso's

Postby AE82 FXGT » Wed Dec 05, 2007 9:49 pm

Hey all,

I'm interested in buying a Charade Detomaso, but I can't seem to find any forums or much info about them.

Just interested in spec levels and common problems that are specific to that car, stuff I should look out for etc.

Answers/direcvtions to where I can find answers would be appreciated.

BTW already searched these forums and read relevant threads.

Awesome wee cars!

I had a 96 one. I bought it at like 66km's and sold at 88km, so didnt show any problems. Altho i managed to crack my drivers door handle, and break the cam cover with a 1/4" rachet 8O. Oh and the lever that holds your door open? You dont realise how great it is until it breaks!

Look under the boot seal, and around the boot, they seem to catch water and get minor rust there.

Mine had Jamex springs, 15" Eagle F1's on CP035's, Jamex seats and a 2.25" exhaust. Dont know why i sold it

Infaaaact *ponders*, maybe when/if i sell the Primera and GT4, i might buy another

EDIT: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 267237.htm

Id check all those things just to be sure! I know mine didnt have any of that bar the boot rust, could be an early model thing?

great cars

Mine was stupidly economical 13-15km per liter.

Build quality is "tin cans"

Neat handling, a bit exciting on the limit with lift off oversteer.

Highly recommend.

Paint will almost certainly be rubbish, clear coat falling off etc.

Only two common problems that I know of:

The heater cores are prone to dying, and they're a prick to replace.

The body kit pieces above the wheels "flares" are often broken/missing.

Fuel economy is ok, but not brilliant - you are driving a car with a rather agressive cam for a road car, and it is a 1.6, so not miserly like daihatsu's other charades.

You sure know you're driving a daihatsu, they rattle around a bit. Had our one for about a year now, still going well. I do think they're horribly overpriced for what they are these days.. but then again

great cars. watch out for peeling clear coaton the black ones however.
from memory spec wise ~92kw...something like that. more than the tvis 4ages, I remember that much.
The daihard (sp?) forum used to have a section for the detoms. was another forum about 4 years ago, but the name slips me now.

My experience was the absolute opposite, it was one of the cheapest cars to run that I have owned, and it had such a pussycat of a cam that you could drive easily and smoothly from 50kph in 5th gear.

I was going to get one for the GF since its small, economical and has some performance. But changed my mind since they have a questionable build quality and safety standard (read that in a few places).

Ended up with an AE101...good old toyota

No, it's fine. It's possible to drive them economically like every car, but the cam is a mr detomaso special, very aggressive for a road car, and the reason they're so quick. It's just difficult for me not to put my foot down :D

The 5th gear is short compared to most, which is why you can cruise / accelerate easily from it.

Cool, thanks for the input guys, yeah it gona be a runabout for me/my little brothers first car.. I'm priority though 8) .

Looks like I'll try to have a decent look at it.
It's a 94 done 21xkms and the guys asking 2500, I'm gonna go halves with the olds.

Yeah read about the poor crash rating, I guess the plan will be to never crash. Can't be any worse than my old rusty ae82 fxgt, though I do miss that car

I have to disagree again. The cam might be more aggressive than the cam in a Daihatsu Applause (same engine), but it has not got a savage cam at all. They drive like a pussycat, and have stupid amounts of torque rather than top end.

Either I had a tame one, or you had a wild one. Mine did stupid good economy no matter what I did to it, and had massive torque compared to a 4AGE, and absolutely no top end compared to the 4AGE (I had a silvertop corolla and my DeTomato at the same time).

Well that deal fell through he wanted a bit more in the end.

Well if anyone sees a good detomaso for sale post it up (yes I do daily searches on trademe). If a real mint example comes up I may trade the trusty gtz for it.

And if you see an average one thats not on trademe, post it up anyway I'll look at anything detomaso and manual.

that daihard forums a bit deserted I think, I signed up ages ago and a mod hasn't activated my account yet. There don't really appear to be public posts either...
