Repair or replace windshield?

Postby AE86less » Sat Dec 08, 2007 12:34 am

Just a quick question:

I got my car back from the paint shop on thursday night and the windscreen was fine. I got home on Friday arvo and there is a big crack from the bottom edge of the windshield (where something must huve knocked the very edge as there is a clear impact point) and up toward the middle, it is about 40cm long i think.

I'm guessing this is not repairable? Can anyone recommend a fairly priced auto glass place in auckland/north shore? This fcks me off; i had a new screen put in about 2 1/2 months ago and i've only driven the car about 500-600kms since then

Cheers for that! I'll give them a call on monday.

The car isn't insured right now, when i crashed it i only had 3rd party and i decided after that that i would fork out for comprehensive. The car has been off the road since september while i saved up for the repair.

crack smaller than 150mm i think it is, they can repair but bigger you have to replace it

You'll probably find that the windscreen cannot be repaired as the crack originates from the edge of the windscreen which means it is structural (the windscreen is a structural component on most modern monocoque chassis cars).

However you will probably also be pleasantly surprised to learn that generally a replacement windscreen will be under the $300 mark unless you have a cavalier ($6,000) or a $&#$% Z20 soarer ($2,400) :\

Ring Smith & Smith and ask for a best price quote, failing that try Brent from Bairds Glass on 021 684 567

as above just call smith and smith or novis. They will be able to say over the phone quicker than waiting for a forum response.

The guy was doing a cashie. I think the crunch on the edge was from the bonnet moving over in the crash and the very bottom corner nicking the edge of the windshield.

Cheers for the help guys. I'll start calling round.

WTF? $6k for a cavalier windscreen?!

I had 3 little chips in my windscreen, and it couldnt be repaired. It ended up cracking 30cm or so. I had mine done under insurance, but smith and smith wairau road were awesome, came all the way up to dairy flat and did it at my house.

AE86 windscreens are a bastard...I assume facelift windscreens are different, basically a mate had 3 windscreens via Smith and Smith, none of which fitted exactly right (couldn't use the piece of trim along the bottom of the windscreen).
