The end of Prodrive

Postby Cahuna » Wed Dec 12, 2007 5:04 pm

For those who hadn't heard about it through the news...

Statement from Steven Kennedy President, MotorSport New Zealand

Prodrive driver training programme suspended for lack of funding

After training almost 50,000 young drivers over the past 15 years, the Prodrive Driver Education Programme run by MotorSport New Zealand and its member clubs has been suspended.

Lack of financial certainty meant we couldn't provide our staff with the security they were entitled to expect.

The Prodrive Driver Education Trust, which was responsible for operations, has had fantastic support during the past two decades from Toyota New Zealand and Car Haulaways and many other great sponsors who have helped too, but we have not been able to replace some key cash funding which means we are unable to continue.

The programme, which was offered free to senior secondary school students, was devised by MotorSport New Zealand and driven mainly by John Osborne who, together with other staff over the years and car club members from around the country, have worked tirelessly to teach young drivers the skills of safe driving.

We know from all the letters and emails we have had over the years that there are thousands of young, and now not so young, drivers who learned practical driving skills in the programme that have helped them survive on our roads.

Driver education is a step away from the core business of MotorSport New Zealand but our members believed we could help young drivers learn the art of defensive driving and survival skills on the roads. That is no less relevant today than when we started 15 years ago, but without secure funding it would be irresponsible of the organisation and unfair to our staff to continue.

If, in the future, we can obtain secure funding then the suspension will be reviewed, in the meantime can we just thank everyone who has been involved over the past fifteen years for your contribution to the safety of our country's fine young adults.

So the little driver education programme that could has finally been stifled due to lack of funding. I'm sure that the LTSA will be overjoyed that this little ray of sunshine that has been teaching young drivers to think when driving has been extinguished, allowing it to get on with peddling its party line of "if you don't drink-drive or exceed the speed limit and you wear a seatbelt you'll be safe"
We know that four-wheel drive doesn't work in a racing car, and I proved to myself that it doesn't work very well for rallycross. I'm absolutely convinced that it has no future in rallying, either, even if the regulations allowed it. - Roger Clark (rallying legend), circa 1976

According to the LTSA it is not accredited because it could be linked to encouraging reckless / skid driving on public roads...

Pro-drive was a fantastic operation. Big ups to everyone who was involved.

You could probably pay for the funding shortfall for prodrive, by firing 1 or 2 of the overpaid bureaucrats that work for LTSA & do absolutely nothing but invent new useless reports that no one ever reads.

Shame on the LTSA
Ending up with spare parts in assembling things since 1983

I started teaching about the same time, while still on my restricted licence (teaching kids older than me :) ). I still remember the reaming I received from Ozzie one day when he discovered grass in the bead of the tyre; one of my students hadn't listened to me during the slalom and we had a bit of aerial action. Let's just say that I have never taught the slalom in the same way since! Ah, good times...

I've seen the reaction from countless students who have been through the course and IMHO it should be a compulsory part of the school/driver training curriculum.

That makes me sad. I was just looking at my certificate for that the other day, it was one of the best courses I did in my progression from a learner driver to fully licenced. I've used the skills I learnt many times and can say they have saved my life on at least one occasion this year.

Agree with everyone. I did it and it was a great way to learn about driving and concentration. IMO it should replace or become part of the Defensive driving course.

Also the "Promotes skids" mentality is dumb... I mean when we did it the only thing we wanted to do were skids + fast driving... but we soon learnt that we weren't good enough drivers to control a fishtailing Echo (at age 15), so had to actually pay attention to the tutor. It was a good way to get into the car club as well.

Sad to see it go.

OMG.. You probably taught me ... twice..

What a shame, this course teaches so much more than the lame 'say and then pray' defensive driving course!

Too true, I remember when I did it last year that I was the only person in the entire class that knew what understeer was, and half of them had done defensive driving courses not long before that!

Got John Osbourne as our tutor too (also had the only auto of the group :(). Was damn fun and really, really useful :D
