Down by my parents house they have a perminent one setup now. I went past in the starion doing bang on 50 on the speedo and it read 44... no wonder people get pissed following me since I do the speed limit on my speedo
Wonder if there was a cop sitting on the side of the road whether you could pull over, ask if his radar has been calibrated recently and then ask if you could do a drive by at 50 and see what he reads.... would be well worth it i think...
mental note... might do that next cop i see :)

There was also a news article a short while back stating that the cops are ticketing anyone doing over 54kph around schools, and have been ticketing anyone doing over 55 for at least two years, as I can testify.

Having checked the police website though, it is with interest that while they state that 500 child pedestrians and cyclists are killed during school term, there are no stats to specify where they are killed. Enforcing the limits around schools is perfectly justifiable, but a waste of resources if they are all killed out of the 250m boundary... just sayin'.

O.K personally I think that the 5kph over the limit is stupid for the above mentioned reasons, I was led to believe that there was about a 10% leeway in the warrant of fitness regs?? can anyone confirm this.

Personally I believe that the limit should be 40 or even 30 kph during those times that the children are coming or going from school but they should mark it properly, I know in some places they have big LED signs showing the reduced speed limit during those times and they stand out like dogs balls. This should be done everywhere as I know that in Dunedin you can be all of a sudden going past a school without realising as they are kind of hidden away. The stupidest one in Dunedin starts just around a corner beside a busy intersection goes for about half a k because there are a couple of schools then finishes about 25m before a kindergaton 8O who thought that one up??

The well indicated temporary speed zone has little chance of becoming the standard as it would cost money and save lives, rather than appearing to be doing something, making more money and not saving any lives.

Could have been worse, if it was during school hours and you were passing a bus to let kids off you would have been ticketed for doing 38k's over the limit 8O

seems a little odd to me that it was out of school hours, I would have thought the 11km/h tolerance would have applied

I think most traffic cops will pull you over for doing 60. Even f its just to check/warn you. Not so much for a ticket.

But the biggest problem with the speeding issue in nz is the same as the drinking issue.

People believe its ok to speed 10% over, or its ok to drive after a drink, aslong as you are below the limit, or below the 10% over.

If people were taught from young that the law is 50km, no more, and that if you drink, you don't drive then it would stop alot of tickets.

Note: I don't believe that the above would reduce the road toll much (well, the drinking mite, the speed issue I don't think). I believe thats more of a issue of driver training/abiltly (or lack of...)
