Insurance Price increases?

Postby AE86less » Tue Dec 18, 2007 12:59 pm

I just wondered if insurance prices had increased in the last little while? (3-4 months)

About 4 months ago I was in the process of getting my aw insured (I crashed the day before i confirmed the policy :x ) At this stage I had the car valued at $3.5k, I was quoted $710.08 p/y by John Rae Insurance.

After I crashed I decided not to pay insurance for a car i wouldn't be driving, so I didn't bother. I got back to the person I was dealing with at John Rae with a new value of $4.5k and she said due to price increases the best she could do was $1,482.68.

This is exactly $772.60 more, or more than double the original quote. I expected the premium to go up with the car insured for more but I simply can't believe that price increases in no more than 4 months would double the price. Should I be complaining?

It is.

Perfect panel work, no rust, brand new paint, 25km since a $3.5k engine and clutch rebuild by toyota which was done in 1993.

Did you tell them it had been crashed, and repaired? this often increases the cost of the premium, as it shows a history of possible claims.

No I didn't. There is no official record of the crash anywhere, only a chunk of bark missing on a tree in Howick.

They already knew about my previous crash and tickets, i did it all legit the first time.

Do you have a mortgage, or long history with a bank, just rang mine to enquire. 4.5k cover $500 excess full insurance for over 25 = $14.26 per fortnight (BNZ premiercare) but i have a mortgage home & contents insurance, 2 cars and a motorbike insured with them. IAG is the insurance underwriter. try them

I have a 13 year history with ASB (been there since I was 5). When I went to them (before I tried John Rae) they said $1200 p/y for 3rd party and wouldn't give me full cover.

EDIT: Would it be cheaper if I insured my other 2 cars with them for a while? Just 3rd party? Neither of them are drivable.

I had the same problem when i was with westpac, and the wife did with asb, now we have a mortgage and are with bnz, everythin is sweet
I would ring the local bnz, and asked to be put though to insurance, ask the questions, they may try and sway you to the dark side, but its worth a try. For a $900 a year saving i would swap banks

QFT.

I guess i'll just have to try shopping around again.

It said in the consumer magazine that insurance prices have come down since last year...

Can anyone reccomend a good insurance agent for me to try for insurance?
car is a 1996 RX7, catback exhaust, headunit, 17" wheels and some mazdaspeed strutbraces.
im 20, turning 21 in a week, 2 speeding tickets (neither more than 15k over) and 1 ticket for no wof (i was outside the garage i was going to!). Have full license. car is alarmed and garaged each night, cannot be seen from the road. garaged in a rural area.

Currently with NAC who are loving the $1500 premium.

yep mine went up at its annual renewal a couple months back. not much tho as I hadn't changed anything on my policy.

perhaps it comes down to mainly the increase in value in your case, I dunno. Try ask for a price for the original value and see what they come to you with.

Too many ppl crashing 8O , also note the insurance for car club events has gone up also, so expect the events to cost more

Try Insure direct, heres the number 0800 505 885

they gave me insurance on my corolla with mods

quite reasonable at under 500 per year

alarm and garaged make a big difference to them from what i could figure out

great to deal with
Nothing to see here ...

i am with insure direct tho i have heard some bad stories about them.
they have been prompy with my glass cover claims though.
i found i jumped up 20$ a month just by moving house from tawa to upper hutt  when i changed from restricted to full license they also claimed i has reached their minimum premium and there was no reduction
