Personally, I hope the laws are used to crack down on middle-aged people who I see as the consistently worst offenders, habitual speeding, never stopping at stop signs, failing to give way, blatantly running red lights, passing in dangerous places, not wearing seatbelts, always talking on phones etc. I'm forever having close calls with these idiots, I can't remember the last time I had a problem with a young person driving, let alone a "boyracer".

I don't see how these laws are going to change anything for me, I don't speed or run red lights, I always stop at stop signs, I always give way and I don't have a radar detector because I don't need one. I find it funny that people bitch about speeding laws, it's not hard to regularly check your speedo while driving, no different than looking at your mirrors.

im all for it.

its proven fines dont work.
if you dont break the law, you have no problems.
i also am very surprised radar dectectors were ever legal.

time to harden the fcuk up nz.

anyone who claims these rules inhibit there rights or freedoms, should automaticly have all driving PRIVILEGES removed instantly as you obviously like to drive like a cock and endangering others.

now what they NEED to do is toughen up the driver training system
or have a driver training system....

I like most of the idea, bar the noisy car and radar detector plans. Unless they can come up with a bomb proof way of proving how loud your car is, its only gonna end up like the last round of noise laws.

Not that I really care about any of the laws and I'm not taking a dig at you per say so don't take this personally but anyone who spurts on about driving being a privilege is an idiot.

Why is it a privilege? WE pay or roads, WE pay for road maintenance, WE pay for traffic police etc. Driving is a right we pay for by tax and THAT wonderful decision was made by the idiot polititions YOU (ie. voters) decided to give the power to control the country and your life to.

I actually am. Just have to see whether the light is at the top or bottom, all good.

My old man has a saying "If you're speeding and you don't see the cop, then you weren't paying enough attention to be driving that fast", I saw radar detectors as an extension of this (I don't have one). I agree with BZG Wagon, if someone is going to hide behind bridges and trees to fire light at me I think I should have a right to know when they are doing it.

On a side note, an Argentinian guy at work was telling me that speed cameras are illegal there because some lawyers sued the police force for taking unwanted photos and breaching their privacy.

you have the right to the privilege. hows that? :P
either way it doesnt matter. its something that should be removed from you if you fail at it.

but, a right is something you are entitled too no matter what.
driving isnt a right, you have to show you are capable of passing a scratchy test!

How about demerits for people who constantly travel at 70k on the open road in a 100k zone. They probably create more traffic problems than 1/2 the other things listed.

IMO if you cant drive close to the speed limit then you shouldn't be driving.

driving

Postby ezy10s » Sat Dec 22, 2007 2:32 pm

everyone who attains a lisence has done so by proving themselves to the authoroties that they are capable and willing to abide by the rules as set out in the road code- why is it so hard to see that if you are failing to do so there should be penalties. rules are rules they are there for all our protection. As the roads get busier there has to be more restrictions on what drivers are allowed to do- otherwise the roads will just continue to kill more and more people every year.

As for the right to drive- if you fail to abide by the rules you are the one to blame when the 50 take your car. dont break the law and there wont be any problems.

Radar detectors- if you need one to make you slow down in an area where you dont know the speed limit once again youre not adhearing to the rules you agreed to by not being observant of your surroundings aka the road signs- and if you are unaware of the speed limit why not just asume its 50 rather than assume its 70-100.

These are my thoughts on the road rules- I am not saying i adhear to them all the time(to say the very least) and some of you will know this of me. If your in the wrong and get caught there is noone to blame but yourself, all you should do is accept it.

If you think the police are being tough on motorists spare a thought for gun collectors- depending on what class lisence they have the police have the right to bowl into your house at anytime they feel like it and inspect your weapons and the way they are being stored etc etc.If they arent happy they can simply take your shit and send to to court.

Imagine random roadside road code testing- thats something to fear

The only thing that annoys me slightly is the radar detector law. In my opinion that infringes on personal freedoms. The presense of a radar detector does not necessarily mean one speeds habitually.

There is one reason I would own a radar detector, and that is for overtaking on the open road where pretty much every person breaks the speed limit to do so. Having bing pinged at 130 while overtaking, I could do without having this happen again.

Bingo!
I own a radar detector, I DON'T speed at all, i like to sit on the speed limit. On the open road it's great, you follow some w@nker doing 80 in a 100 zone, you get up to a passing bay and the dickhead speeds up to 120! So of course you go faster to get past the lunatic driver...

well there are alot of valid points made here, it still doesnt get to the root of the problem.

Driver training and licensing.
Look at germany, you cant just sit some 4 minute test (thats how long it took me) to get a learner license and then be allowed to drive.

There you know how to drive a vehicle and how to control it.

Im sick of dipshits that pull out without looking, failing to indicate and tail gaters, yet they dont seem to target any of that irresponsible behaviour.

Most police cars dont drive around with their radars on anyway, so im not too bothered about the radar detector law (go v1 for the remote kit)

Once again someone has gotten on their high horse and thinks they come up with the best thing since sliced bread.

But once again, we will sit back, bitch about it and it will be made law.

If i win lotto, im going to buy me a hummer, that way i cant speed and people will think twice about driving like a dickhead.

They probably also create more of the road toll than 1/2 of the other things listed.

The other new rule that bothers me is the 25 demerit points if your car is noisy. Noise is not a safety issue, and until we see some sort of proper test it's just left up to the discretion of the officer to decide if your car is noisy or not.

While I agree that something needs to be done, I think all this will do is add more delay in our already ineffective court system and lead to even more uninsured people on our roads

As proven daily by repeat offenders, taking away someones license and/or car will not stop them driving.

so they lower the fines, which really means they didnt need all that extra money in the first place.

They should lower those demerits, and increase the fines 10x.

And put 100% of that money into making our roads less utterly shit.

How about they also do things about dodgy cars, im sure the WOF checks hasnt been looked at for a while, and dont get me started about a) the cheap nasty chinese car parts, or b) second hand imported tyres.

What I can see happening, is people who drive lots (truckies for example) will put there prices up due to the utterly high risk of them now loosing their licenses, and having to pay someone else to drive for them

igree that something needs to be done with the driving in general but i think this is just a tad too extreme. i think the punishment outweighs the crime i mean 3/4ths of your license gone for one red light, however i still dont thenk this will stop speeding, lack of seatbelt wearing etc.
i think massive fines and if unpaid, CRUSH CRUCH CRUSH

How many more car chases are we going to have?
They need to tighten that law up so you get mandatory prison if you try to evade police, otherwise where is the incentive to pull over when they flick the police lights on.

Thats the ONLY time that i do, and people will understand where i'm coming from with this one. I do alot of travelling long distance and it's truely amazing how many people will go from 80 up to 120 just cause there's a passing lane :?
