You break the laws you face the consiquences end of story. Your doing nothing wrong then you have no reason to get a ticket. If they give you a ticket thats unjust then write in. 10 Years ago when I was on my resticted basically everyone followed the rules, when we used to cruise we each had our own car and I never got a ticket. I think there is something wrong with the new generation, might have something to do with the fact they they can tick up a car thats to powerful for them and get into trouble, might be a respect thing, probably both.
Even the aussie have a beter idea about getting your licence, read up on their rules and you'll relise how soft our licencing rules are!
I have no sympathy for people that get tickets and cars confiscated.

One word people:

Vote.

There is an election coming within the year, vote your district's rival to Labour/Greens. No BS about it being a waste of time or how you don't vote, just vote. We can sit at our keyboards and bitch and whine about this and watch it happen, or we can at least try and do something about it.

i don't have an issue with there being penalties for breaking the rules.
what i do have an issue with is when the penalties aren't relative to the rule that you have broken.

the way they currently stand is not too bad, there are a few areas that are way too harsh (pretty much all laws open to interpretation by police) and some that are way too soft (driving too slow, drink driving).

if these changes go through, most of the laws will be way out of balance with the "crime" you have committed.
they will just be turning ordinary NZ citizens into convicted criminals with no drivers license.
A lot of peoples employment relies on having a valid drivers licence, yes you can get work licenses, but the legal costs involved in defending a charge or getting a work license are almost uneconomical.

its another crap kneejerk reaction by politicians trying to justify their existence. it has nothing to do with road safety and a lot to do with trying to score cheap votes before an election year.

If your job relies on your licence then you would be extra careful not to break the law right?
I value my licence and that is why I obey the laws.

But agreed, i think a rethink of penalties vs crime would be a good start.
I do think though that whats there isn't enough of a deterent though. Like on the news they were talking to some boyracers and they were saying giving them a fine is a waste of time, paying it off at $10 a week keep em coming. Take their car off them for 6 months once they racked up $1000 worth of fines might make them think...

Can't say I see a problem with the new laws. They're fixing symptoms though, not the root of the problem; they need to completely overhaul the entire driver training and licencing system.

It irks me to see all these new laws introduced, just after having read about ProDrive being closed down :?

without turning this too political, do you really think National would do any different in this area? I have not been listening to politics on the radio these last few months, but I cant see they are overly opposed to the idea.

As said, we need a complete overhaul, but that wont fix the 15-80's already on the road

yeah. i dont see to many political parties being opposed to this.
toughning up the rules/enforcement will appear to be cracking down on the "boy racers"

Its always the car you don't see that hits you, or the cop you don't see that catches you.

75 is nothing compard to the damage running red lights causes when you hit another motorist or pedestrian.

Funny how different parts of NZ drive differently though...
I'm from christchurch who i think have the most aggressive drivers in NZ, I have driven all over the country and I hate driving in auckland, wellington isn't to bad, nelson is fine.

I think part of the problem is the roading. For example in chch down the far end of moorehouse ave by deans ave they put that new by pass to main south road. That is the single worse thing that the city council ever did, more congestion on the roads, bigger waits and lines of traffic. People don't like the, become more aggressive then start doing stupid risky things like running red lights.
But i'm not sure bout the rest of the country but at 5 on a work day everyone heading home, fitz ave, main south road, linwood ave, ferry road, all the main roads out of the center of the city are packed with cars, each with only ONE person in each car. Say everyone car pooled with at least 1 other person, instantly you have half the cars on the road! Thus less road rage cause people aren't having to wait in long queues.

I think this is just part of a much bigger problem, but i think they need to start somewhere.

I want to see a situation where failing to indicate properly or at all results in loss of license.

If you cant even $&#$% indicate, then I guess you cant guide 1.3tonnes at 100km/h, so get the $&#$% off the roads.

Nothing $&#$% me off more than people who cant indicate properly.

car pooling is a myth
will not ever work in nz
not on a large scale anyway.

for it to work you need:
ppl that live close together
ppl that work at the same place
ppl that work samehours
all of the above....

So what happens if a 30kph zone sneaks up on you as you come out of a 100kph zone... and you're doing 45kph? loose car?
What happens when the trafic is moving slowly and the light goes orange just before you cross the line and is red before you are out of the intersection? 75 demerits?

I only takes one wanker cop to make these rules over the top.

If you run a red light you deserve to get a ticket. The rules are that you must stop when it goes from green to amber, unless it's unsafe to do so. It's not "Oh it's amber so I don't need to stop until it goes red."
